PART 5: The Names on the Records

PART 5: The Names on the Records

Audrey felt the air leave her lungs.

Change their names.

For one second, she could not understand the words.

Then she looked at the incubators.

Ava Bennett.

Lucas Bennett.

Tiny bracelets around tiny wrists.

Her babies.

Her blood.

Her body had carried them for twenty-nine dangerous weeks. Her hands had pressed against her stomach through every contraction. Her voice had whispered to them through oxygen masks and pain medication and fear.

Daniel had been trying to take even their names.

Catherine moved first.

“Lock the records,” she told the nurse. “No changes without court authorization.”

The nurse nodded and hurried out.

General Mercer turned to one of the soldiers.

“Stay with those doors.”

The soldier stepped into place.

Daniel’s voice rose.

“You people have no authority here.”

Catherine looked at him.

“Actually, the hospital does. And soon, the court will.”

Daniel turned to Audrey.

His mask was gone now.

No calm husband.

No concerned father.

Only anger.

“You want to play victim? Fine. But those babies need insurance. They need care. You can’t pay for this room. You can’t even stand up.”

Audrey flinched.

Not because it was true.

Because he knew exactly where to hit.

Her body felt broken.

Her milk had barely come in.

She could not hold Ava for more than a few minutes before nurses took her back to the incubator.

Lucas had stopped breathing twice the night before.

Audrey had never felt more helpless in her life.

Daniel saw the pain in her eyes and mistook it for surrender.

He stepped closer.

“Sign the papers. Give me the condo. Agree to shared custody. I’ll make sure they’re taken care of.”

General Mercer’s hand curled into a fist.

But Audrey raised one hand.

“Grandpa.”

He stopped.

She wanted to answer Daniel herself.

Her voice shook, but it did not break.

“You don’t get to threaten me with my children’s survival.”

Daniel sneered.

“Then pay for it.”

The room went quiet.

General Mercer reached into his uniform jacket and pulled out a folded document.

He handed it to Catherine.

She opened it, scanned the first page, then looked at Audrey.

“Audrey, your grandfather established a medical trust for you when you were born. It was updated when you got married, and again when you became pregnant.”

Audrey stared at him.

“What?”

General Mercer’s expression softened for the first time.

“Your grandmother and I built it for the day you might need protection and refuse to ask.”

Audrey’s throat closed.

Daniel went pale.

Catherine turned the document so Daniel could see the header.

“The Mercer Family Trust will cover every medical cost for Ava and Lucas. It also secures Audrey’s legal defense, housing, and full forensic accounting.”

Daniel’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Rachel sank into a chair by the wall.

Audrey whispered, “Why didn’t I know?”

General Mercer looked at her with sorrow.

“Because you were supposed to live freely. Not like someone waiting for a rescue plan.”

Audrey covered her mouth as tears spilled over.

Daniel backed away, eyes darting.

Money had been his weapon.

And now it was gone.

Catherine continued, “There is more. The trust also means Audrey’s premarital condo was protected under a separate legal structure before the marriage. Daniel never had a claim.”

Rachel looked up.

“He told me it was almost his.”

Catherine’s eyes were cold.

“He lied to you too.”

Rachel began to cry harder.

Daniel turned on her.

“Shut up, Rachel.”

The NICU door opened again.

A hospital administrator entered with two police officers.

Daniel straightened quickly.

“Finally. I want him arrested for assault.”

He pointed at General Mercer.

The administrator did not look at the general.

She looked at Daniel.

“Mr. Bennett, we need to discuss unauthorized access to neonatal patient records and suspected identity manipulation.”

Daniel’s face drained.

One officer stepped forward.

“Sir, we’re going to need you to come with us.”

Daniel glanced at Audrey.

And for one terrifying second, his eyes dropped to the incubators.

Like if he could not control her, he might still find a way to control them.

General Mercer saw it.

So did Audrey.

She reached across the incubator and placed her trembling hand over Ava’s name bracelet.
