Catherine Vale opened the sealed folder.
Daniel tried to laugh.
It came out thin.
“This is ridiculous. My wife is unstable. She’s exhausted. She had a traumatic delivery. You people are taking advantage of her.”
Audrey closed her eyes for one second.
How many times had he used that voice?
Calm.
Reasonable.
Concerned.
The voice that made everyone look at her like she was fragile.
Like pain made her unreliable.
Like a woman crying in a hospital room could not also be telling the truth.
Catherine did not react.
She pulled out the first document.
“Daniel Bennett opened three credit accounts in Audrey’s name during her second trimester.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Audrey stared at him.
“What?”
Catherine placed the pages where Audrey could see them.
“Two were used for private travel. One was used for jewelry, hotel charges, and maternity purchases that were not delivered to Audrey.”
Rachel’s face collapsed further.
The coat.
The hotel.
The jewelry.
All paid for with Audrey’s credit.
Audrey’s stomach turned.
Daniel pointed at Catherine.
“You can’t prove I opened anything.”
Catherine pulled out the next page.
“Digital signatures. IP records. Device logs. Security camera stills from the bank branch on May 14.”
Daniel went quiet.
General Mercer’s eyes stayed locked on him.
Audrey reached for the side of the incubator to steady herself. Her C-section incision burned. Her vision blurred around the edges.
A nurse stepped close.
“Mrs. Bennett, you need to sit back.”
Audrey gave a faint, bitter smile.
“I am sitting.”
No one laughed.
Catherine continued.
“Daniel also attempted to transfer Audrey’s premarital condo into a marital asset trust two days after she was admitted for preterm labor.”
Audrey’s mouth parted.
The condo.
Her grandmother’s condo.
The only thing she owned outright.
The place Daniel hated because he could not touch it.
Daniel leaned toward Audrey.
“You were going to lose it anyway. You can’t afford these medical bills.”
General Mercer stepped between them again.
Daniel stopped.
Catherine looked at Audrey more gently now.
“He told the hospital billing office you had no secondary coverage and no family assistance.”
Audrey turned slowly toward her grandfather.
His face was tight with controlled rage.
“That is why no one called me,” he said.
A nurse near the door looked ashamed.
“We only had Mr. Bennett listed as emergency contact. He said her family was estranged.”
Audrey whispered, “He changed my forms.”
Daniel snapped, “I was her husband.”
General Mercer’s voice was ice.
“You were her captor.”
Rachel suddenly moved toward Daniel.
“This wasn’t supposed to be like this.”
Daniel glared at her.
“Be quiet.”
But Rachel was crying now. Not from guilt, Audrey thought. From fear.
“You said she already signed the condo papers. You said after the babies were born, we could move in.”
Audrey stared at her.
The room tilted.
Rachel had not just stolen a coat.
She had been promised Audrey’s home.
Daniel rubbed his face, panic rising.
“She’s lying.”
Catherine lifted another document.
“Then she will enjoy explaining why her name appears on the draft occupancy agreement.”
Rachel froze.
Audrey’s hands shook.
Daniel had not only planned to leave her.
He had planned to replace her.
Wife.
Home.
Children.
All of it.
Catherine’s voice softened but stayed firm.
“Audrey, we need your permission to file immediately and notify law enforcement.”
Audrey looked at the twins.
Ava’s monitor beeped steadily.
Lucas shifted under his blanket, tiny and fighting.
Daniel had counted on their fragility.
He had counted on Audrey’s pain.
He had counted on her silence.
She lifted her chin.
“File everything.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You’ll regret this.”
Before anyone could answer, a nurse rushed in from the hallway.
“Security just found someone trying to access the twins’ records.”
The room went still.
Catherine turned.
“Who?”
The nurse swallowed.
“Someone using Mr. Bennett’s login.”
Audrey looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked at Rachel.
