Chapter 9 - What Victor Hid in the Storage Unit
Police obtained a warrant for the storage unit.
Victor had rented it under the name of one of his shell companies.
Inside were boxes from Bennett Medical Transport.
Original bank ledgers.
Corporate seals.
Medical reports.
Andrew Bennett’s personal effects from the night he died.
The most important item was a damaged vehicle-maintenance report.
Andrew’s car had undergone brake service three days before the crash.
The invoice came from a garage partly owned by Victor.
At the time, Victor had not yet married Rebecca.
He had been consulting for Bennett Medical Transport and knew Andrew planned to remove him from the company’s financial restructuring project.
The storage unit also contained recorded calls between Victor and the garage manager.
One occurred the morning after Andrew’s death.
Victor said, “Destroy the original work order.”
The manager answered, “You said no one would be hurt.”
The call did not prove Victor ordered murder.
It proved he concealed evidence connected to the crash.
Investigators reopened Andrew’s death case.
Claire struggled with the new possibility.
Victor had entered their lives after the funeral as a comforting adviser.
What if he had created the grief he later exploited?
Nathan encouraged her to focus on what was proven.
“He harmed you. He stole from the trust. He forged records. The crash investigation belongs to professionals.”
Claire nodded.
For years, Victor had forced her to live inside uncertainty.
She did not want another unanswered question consuming every part of her life.
The financial evidence was already overwhelming.
Ledgers showed Victor had diverted trust money through fake consulting firms.
He used part of it to purchase commercial properties.
Another portion funded political donations and payments to Dr. Ross.
A large amount went into a private legal-defense account.
Victor had prepared for exposure long before the wedding.
He was released pending a formal detention hearing.
A strict no-contact order prevented him from approaching Claire.
Within hours, he violated it indirectly.
A television reporter received copies of Claire’s psychiatric records.
The story described her as a wealthy bride attempting to seize control of a company from the stepfather who rescued it.
Victor expected shame to work again.
This time, Claire did not answer him alone.
Naomi released only the court-confirmed facts.
The bank transfer.
The forged signature.
The invalidated trust authority.
No photographs of Claire’s scars were made public.
Her body would not become evidence for strangers to examine.
Then Dr. Ross appeared on television and claimed Claire had a history of harming herself.
