Chapter 16 - The Marriage After the Revelation
The first year of marriage was not effortless.
Claire sometimes woke when Nathan moved too quickly beside her.
She avoided having her back touched without warning.
Nathan occasionally became angry at himself for failing to notice before the wedding.

Evening walks.
Arguments about which movies deserved sequels.
Nathan burned pasta regularly.
Claire pretended it was a legal strategy.
Their marriage became ordinary.
That ordinariness felt healing.
Claire also began individual trauma treatment.
The scars remained.
She considered surgery to reduce some of them.
Her physician explained the options without suggesting she needed to change how they looked.
Claire chose treatment for areas that caused pain and limited movement.
She left the others untouched.
The decision belonged to comfort, not shame.

The receiver recovered contracts Victor had diverted.
Employees elected a representative to the trust board.
Claire accepted one seat but refused automatic control.
“My father built protection around one child,” she said. “The company now needs protection that does not depend on one family.”
A new governance structure separated company finances from personal trusts.
No spouse, relative, or executive could move assets without independent review.
Claire used recovered personal funds to restore employee benefits Victor had reduced.
She did not use the money to hide business losses.
Everything was documented openly.
Then Naomi asked what Claire wanted to do with the Bennett family home.
Sell it.
Keep it.
Donate it.
The decision frightened Claire more than expected.
Every room contained both childhood memories and Victor’s control.
Nathan made no suggestion.
“What do you want the house to become?” he asked.
