Chapter 7 - The Reception Where Victor Stopped Smiling
Nathan entered the reception holding the encrypted drive.
Claire followed several steps behind him.
Her robe covered the scars, but not the fear on her face.
Victor stood near the champagne tower.
When he saw Nathan approaching, he smiled politely.
“Everything all right upstairs?”
Nathan stopped in front of him.
“No.”
Guests nearby became quiet.
Victor’s phone vibrated again.
A message from his bank stated that the midnight transfer had been suspended under an emergency fraud review.
A second message came from Hale Family Holdings’ lender.
ACCOUNT RESTRICTED PENDING IDENTITY VERIFICATION.
Victor looked toward Claire.
“What have you told him?”
“The truth,” she said.
Victor laughed softly.
“Claire becomes confused when she’s overwhelmed.”
Nathan’s expression did not change.
“Your psychiatric reports are part of the evidence hold.”
The glass in Victor’s hand tilted.
He had not expected Nathan to know about Dr. Ross.
Naomi entered the ballroom with two investigators from the law firm and the hotel’s security director.
She carried a court petition and the sealed letter from Rebecca’s safe-deposit box.
Victor’s confidence weakened.
“This is a private family matter.”
Naomi answered, “Forgery involving interstate bank transfers is not private.”
Several guests began moving away.
Victor’s attorney approached from the far side of the ballroom.
He had attended the wedding as a family friend.
Nathan looked at him.
“You should preserve your phone.”
The attorney stopped.
Victor attempted to leave through the service hallway.
Hotel security blocked the door.
He was not under arrest yet.
But the hotel had authority to prevent removal of property connected to a reported crime.
Victor’s suit jacket contained a second drive and several notarized documents.
One declared Claire mentally incompetent.
Another appointed Victor temporary controller of her released marital assets.
The physician’s signature belonged to Dr. Ross.
The date was the previous day.
Victor had planned to file the incapacity petition after the transfer.
Claire looked at the documents.
He had expected marriage to trigger the money.
Then he intended to declare her incapable of controlling it.
Nathan asked Claire whether she wanted police called immediately.
She looked at Victor.
For years, he decided what fear allowed her to do.
“Call them.”
Police arrived while the band still stood silently beside the dance floor.
Victor watched officers photograph the documents.
Then Naomi opened Rebecca’s letter.
The first line read:
May you like
Claire, I knew he was hurting you before I admitted it to myself.
👉 Rebecca’s confession would not excuse her silence, but it revealed the evidence Victor had spent years trying to bury.
