PART 5: The Folder on the Island

PART 5: The Folder on the Island
At the hospital, Claire refused pain medication until they found the baby’s heartbeat.
She lay under bright lights, shaking so hard a nurse had to hold her shoulders.
The doctor moved the monitor across her stomach.
Static.
Claire stopped breathing.
The doctor adjusted the probe.
More static.
Tears slid into Claire’s hairline.
“Please,” she whispered.
Then—
A fast, tiny heartbeat filled the room.
Strong.
Fierce.
Alive.
Claire broke.
The nurse squeezed her hand.
“There he is.”
The doctor did not smile fully.
Not yet.
“We need to monitor you. You’re contracting from the trauma. The baby’s heart rate is okay right now, but the next few hours matter.”
Claire nodded through tears.
“Do whatever you need.”
In another part of the city, Ethan sat in an interview room pretending to be confused.
Olivia sat in a separate room pretending to be innocent.
Neither knew the folder had already been copied, photographed, and sent to the Bennett estate attorney.
By sunrise, the truth began taking shape.
The folder contained three unsigned documents and two forged ones.
One document would have given Ethan emergency medical authority over Claire if she became incapacitated.
One would have allowed Ethan to petition for control of her shares in Bennett Shield if she was declared psychologically unstable.
One would have named Olivia as a “temporary household guardian” for the unborn child if Claire was hospitalized.
But the forged documents were worse.
A fake signature approving Olivia’s access to the master safe.
A fake signature authorizing Ethan to liquidate Claire’s protected assets if the pregnancy ended before birth.
Claire’s attorney, Miriam Vale, arrived at the hospital before dawn.
She was in her sixties, with silver hair, sharp eyes, and no patience for charming men.
Claire was awake when Miriam entered.
Her palm was bandaged.
Her face was bruised.
Her left side ached with every breath.
But one hand never left her belly.
Miriam sat beside the bed.
“Claire.”
Claire knew that tone.
“What did they do?”
Miriam’s face softened only slightly.
“They tried to create a legal path to your money through medical control, emotional instability, and loss of pregnancy.”
Claire closed her eyes.
The room spun.
“He said he’d be free.”
Miriam nodded.
“I know.”
Claire opened her eyes.
“How?”
Miriam placed a tablet on the bed tray.
Security footage.
Audio.
The kitchen.
Ethan’s voice.
Lose it, and I’m free.
Claire turned her face away.
Hearing it again hurt differently.
Not because it surprised her.
Because it made denial impossible.
Miriam said, “The system recorded everything after Code Black. But there’s more.”
Claire looked back.
“The bracelet?”
“Yes.”
Olivia’s movement through the house was logged from the tracker embedded in the clasp. She entered the master suite, the safe room, and Robert’s office while Ethan was with her.”
Claire’s lips parted.
“She went into my father’s office?”
“Several times.”
Claire’s body went cold.
Robert’s office held private files.
Estate keys.
Original corporate documents.
Personal letters.
Miriam lowered her voice.
“Claire, Ethan wasn’t only after the trust.”
Claire knew before Miriam said it.
“He wanted Bennett Shield.”
Miriam nodded.
“And Olivia helped him.”
The baby kicked then.
Small but definite.
Claire placed both hands on her stomach and cried silently.
Not from weakness.
From the strange, unbearable relief of knowing her son was still fighting inside her.
Miriam leaned closer.
“Your father built protections for this.”
Claire whispered, “He knew.”
“He suspected.”
Claire looked at the tablet.
At Ethan’s frozen face.
At Olivia wearing her mother’s bracelet.
At the life they thought they could steal while she bled on her own kitchen floor.
Her eyes hardened.
“Then use all of it.”
Miriam nodded.
May you like
“I already started.”
👉 While Claire fought contractions in the hospital, Miriam found the hidden file Robert Bennett had left in case Ethan ever triggered Code Black.
