PART 4: The Sentence That Condemned Him

PART 4: The Sentence That Condemned Him

Lose it, and I’m free.

That sentence echoed through the kitchen even after the sirens began to rise outside the gate.

Claire could still feel Ethan’s hand on her wrist.

Could still feel the hot sting of glass in her palm.

Could still feel her son moving weakly under her left hand.

The security operator stayed on the line.

“Claire Bennett Marlowe, remain on speaker. Police and medical are en route. Estate security is entering the property.”

Ethan’s eyes darted toward the window.

“You set me up.”

Claire’s voice was thin.

“You kicked me.”

Olivia stepped away from the island.

“Ethan, do something.”

The phone answered before he could.

“Mr. Marlowe, step away from Mrs. Marlowe immediately. The kitchen feed is live.”

Ethan went still.

His eyes lifted toward the corner of the room.

The small black camera above the pantry door blinked red.

He had forgotten about it.

Or maybe he had believed turning off the main security panel was enough.

It was not.

Robert Bennett had designed the house himself.

The panic system did not rely on the wall panel.

It had its own power.

Its own network.

Its own recording backup.

Claire’s father had built the house to protect his daughter from exactly the kind of man who would wait until she was alone.

Ethan backed away slowly.

Olivia looked at the camera.

Her face went pale.

“She recorded us?”

The operator’s voice came through again.

“Hands visible. Do not approach the victim.”

Victim.

Claire hated that word.

But at that moment, it kept Ethan from touching her again.

The kitchen door burst open.

Two estate security officers entered first.

They wore black jackets marked BENNETT SHIELD.

One moved directly to Ethan.

The other knelt beside Claire.

“Ma’am, don’t move. Ambulance is two minutes out.”

Claire’s hand tightened over her belly.

“My baby.”

“We’ve got you.”

Ethan raised his hands.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

The security officer looked at the broken glass, the blood on Claire’s palm, Olivia in Claire’s robe, and the documents on the island.

“Then misunderstand quietly.”

Olivia tried to slide the bracelet off.

Claire saw it.

“So now you want to take it off?”

Olivia froze.

The second officer looked at her wrist.

“Is that Mrs. Marlowe’s jewelry?”

Olivia said nothing.

Claire whispered, “It has a tracker.”

Olivia’s face collapsed.

The officer immediately photographed it in place.

Outside, the sirens reached the driveway.

Police entered with paramedics behind them.

Ethan started talking before anyone asked.

“My wife is unstable. She fell. She’s pregnant and emotional.”

Claire closed her eyes.

There it was.

The word men like him always reached for.

Unstable.

The lead officer looked at the security guard.

“Do you have footage?”

The guard glanced at Claire’s phone.

“Yes. Live feed and audio.”

Ethan’s confidence cracked.

One paramedic checked Claire’s pulse while another asked about contractions, pain, bleeding, dizziness.

Claire answered as best she could.

Then a sharp cramp twisted through her body.

Her face went white.

“My stomach,” she gasped.

The paramedic’s expression changed.

“We need to move now.”

As they lifted Claire onto a stretcher, her eyes found Ethan.

He was standing beside Olivia, no longer red with anger.

White with fear.

Claire forced herself to speak.

“You said it on camera.”

Ethan swallowed.

Claire’s voice broke, but she finished.

“You said you wanted him gone.”

The police officer turned slowly toward Ethan.
