Chapter 5 - Secure This Unit

Liam should not have punched Ethan.

He knew that.

Even as his fist connected, some detached part of his doctor’s mind understood the consequences.

A hospital was not a courtroom.

An ER was not a boxing ring.

But seeing Natalie on that bed, hearing Ethan say “she slipped,” watching him stand too close to her while she struggled to breathe—

For one second, Liam was not Dr. Reed.

He was the boy who had promised his dying mother he would protect his little sister.

And he failed into rage.

The officer grabbed Liam’s arm after the punch.

“Doctor, step back.”

Liam lifted both hands.

“I’m stepping back.”

But he did not move away from Natalie’s bed.

Not until another doctor entered and took over her care.

Then Liam became precise.

“Document every injury.”

The trauma nurse nodded.

“Already doing it.”

“Chain of custody on the phone.”

The nurse took an evidence bag from an officer.

“Understood.”

“Security lockdown. No visitors except approved medical staff and law enforcement.”

The charge nurse picked up the desk phone.

“On it.”

Ethan pressed a towel to his jaw.

“This is insane. He assaulted me.”

The officer looked at him.

“Sir, you’re being asked not to move.”

“My wife fell.”

Natalie’s eyes opened slightly.

Her voice came out like torn paper.

“No.”

Everyone heard it.

Ethan froze.

Liam leaned down.

“Natalie, don’t force yourself.”

She looked past him.

At the phone.

“Files.”

“We have them.”

“Liam…”

“I have them.”

Her eyes filled.

“Don’t let him delete me.”

The words hollowed the room.

Even the officer’s expression changed.

Liam took her hand carefully.

“He won’t.”

At the ER desk, the nurse opened the first injury folder under police supervision.

Time-stamped photos.

Dates.

Notes.

Short audio clips.

One file labeled: If I’m admitted, read first.

The officer listened with headphones.

His face hardened.

Then he handed one earbud to his partner.

A few seconds later, the second officer looked at Ethan differently.

Not as a worried husband.

As a suspect.

The Apex folder was separate.

Password-protected.

Liam knew the passphrase immediately.

Milo.

Their childhood dog.

The folder opened.

Internal audit.

Vendor payments.

Emails.

Threats from Ethan.

A voice memo of Ethan saying, “If Apex goes down, you go down with it.”

Liam stared at the screen.

This was bigger than the marriage.

Bigger than the ER.

He turned to the officer.

“You need financial crimes. And hospital legal. Apex has active contracts with this network.”

Ethan shouted, “Those are stolen company documents!”

Natalie turned her head on the pillow.

Her eyes were weak but clear.

“No,” she whispered. “They’re evidence.”

The officer stepped closer to Ethan.

“Sir, we’re going to need you to come with us.”

Ethan’s mask finally cracked.

Not because Natalie was injured.

May you like

Because her phone had survived.

👉 Liam secured the ER before Ethan could touch the phone, and the first opened file turned a domestic assault into a corporate fraud case.
