Chapter 4 - The Night Ethan Lost Control

The night Ethan called 911, Natalie had already sent three files.
Not the full folder.
Just enough to test whether the upload pathway still worked.
Injury photo archive.
Threat log.
Apex vendor list.
The rest was scheduled to send if she failed to stop the countdown.
Ethan did not know that.
He only knew she had stopped being afraid in the way he preferred.
That evening, he came home early from an Apex board dinner.
Natalie was at the kitchen island with her laptop open.
Not hiding it this time.
Ethan loosened his tie.
“What are you doing?”
Natalie did not close the screen.
“I’m leaving.”
He laughed.
A short, empty sound.
“With what money?”
“My own.”
“You don’t have enough.”
“I have enough evidence.”
That word changed his face.
Evidence.
Ethan crossed the room slowly.
“Natalie.”
She stood.
“I sent copies.”
He stopped.
“To who?”
She said nothing.
“To Liam?”
Still nothing.
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“You think your brother can protect you from federal charges?”
Natalie stared at him.
“They won’t be mine.”
That was when Ethan understood she knew more than he thought.
Not just that he hurt her.
Not just that he threatened her.
Apex.
The money.
The shell vendors.
The board presentations.
The illegal patient assistance transfers.
All of it.
He moved toward her.
Natalie backed away.
“I already scheduled everything. If I don’t disable it, the files go out.”
Ethan smiled then.
Cold.
“You always were too clever for your own good.”
He reached for the laptop.
Natalie grabbed it first.
The struggle moved from kitchen to hallway to bathroom because Ethan knew what story he wanted before he created the scene.
Water.
Tile.
Shower.
A fall.
Later, he would say she slipped.
Later, he would say she was under stress.
Later, he would look tired and gentle and devastated.
But in that moment, there was no gentleness.
There was only panic disguised as rage.
Natalie remembered hitting the floor.
Remembered the sound of Ethan breathing hard.
Remembered him searching for her phone.
He found the laptop.
He smashed it.
He did not find the phone under the towel rack.
Natalie had kicked it there before everything went dark.
When she woke briefly, she heard Ethan on the phone.
“My wife slipped in the shower. She’s unconscious. Please hurry.”
His voice broke beautifully.
Oscar-worthy.
Natalie’s fingers moved across the tile.
Her vision blurred.
She found the phone.
Unlocked it with shaking fingers.
Tapped the app.
One button.
Send all.
Then she let the phone slide beneath her palm.
The screen flashed.
EVIDENCE SENT TO LIAM.
Ethan never saw it until the ER.
By then, the files were no longer in the house.
No longer under his control.
No longer destructible.
And Natalie, barely conscious on the bathroom floor, had done the one thing Ethan thought she was too weak to do.

She finished the story before he could write the ending.
👉 Ethan staged the shower fall before calling 911, but Natalie had already hidden the phone where his perfect lie could not reach it.
