Chapter 6 - The Signature Vanessa Should Never Have Used

Adrian held the revised authorization form in both hands.
His tuxedo jacket hung open.
His face looked less like a groom and more like a man waking up in a room he no longer recognized.
“Mara,” he said carefully, “did you sign this?”
“No.”
Vanessa snapped, “It was just a vendor form.”
Mara turned to her.
“With my legal guarantee attached.”
Elaine pressed both hands to her face.
Robert looked toward the door like he might escape through the hallway.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“Did you sign her name?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled instantly.
That was her oldest trick.
Tears first.
Truth later, if forced.
“I was trying to save the day.”
Mara laughed once.
“From the consequences of your own upgrades?”
Vanessa’s voice rose.
“You don’t understand what it feels like to have one day where everyone is finally looking at you.”
The room went silent.
Mara looked at her sister for a long moment.
“You think I don’t understand being unseen?”
That made Vanessa look away.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Vanessa. Did you forge her signature?”
Vanessa’s lips trembled.
“I didn’t think it mattered. She always fixes things.”
Mara closed her eyes.
There it was.
Not apology.
Not guilt.
Expectation.
Elaine reached for Mara’s arm.
“Mara, we can discuss this privately.”
Mara stepped back.
“No more privately.”
Robert finally spoke.
“It was a harmless mistake.”
Kaleo’s expression hardened.
“Mr. Ellison, forged authorization on a guaranteed contract is not harmless.”
Robert glared at him.
“This is a family wedding.”
Kaleo lifted the invoice stack.
“This is also a business agreement.”
Mara looked at Adrian.
“You need to know something else.”
Vanessa’s head snapped up.
“Mara.”
Mara ignored her.
“Your parents sent their contribution. The $25,000 for the welcome dinner and transportation.”
Adrian nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“Vanessa redirected it.”
His face went still.
“What?”
Vanessa whispered, “Don’t.”
Mara picked up another folder.
She had not planned to bring it out in the suite.
She had planned to send it to legal after leaving Hawaii.
But Vanessa had crossed every line.
Mara opened the folder and placed bank confirmations on the table.
“The money from the Blake family was deposited into the wedding account. Two days later, it was transferred to a personal luxury account under Vanessa’s name.”
Adrian stared at the document.
“That was for the wedding.”
Vanessa cried harder.
“I needed final dress payments.”
“The dress was already paid,” Mara said.
Vanessa’s face shifted.
Adrian looked sick.
“What did you buy?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Mara answered.
“Jewelry. A private stylist. And a social media videographer not included in the original budget.”
Adrian turned away, one hand over his mouth.
Elaine whispered, “Mara, enough.”
Mara looked at her mother.
“No. Enough was when she uninvited me after using my name. Enough was when she forged my signature. Enough was when all of you looked at me like a bank account with feelings you could ignore.”
Robert slammed one hand on the table.
“Do not speak to your mother that way.”
Mara turned on him.
“You taught Vanessa how to do this.”
Robert froze.
“You promised money you didn’t have, let me guarantee contracts you knew you couldn’t pay, and then let everyone blame me when the truth arrived.”
His face paled.
Kaleo’s phone buzzed.
He checked it.
“Ms. Ellison, the florist is requesting confirmation. They are halfway through removing the ceremony arch.”
Vanessa broke.
“No! Tell them to stop!”
Kaleo looked at Mara.
Mara did not look away from her family.
“Continue.”
