Chapter 10 - The Father Who Borrowed From A Wedding

Robert came to Mara at midnight.

Not in the conference room.

Not in the lobby.

On the beach.

Mara had gone there because the ocean was the only thing in Hawaii not asking her for a decision.

She stood barefoot near the waterline, phone in one hand, sandals in the other.

Robert approached slowly.

For once, he looked like a man without a speech prepared.

“Mara.”

She did not turn.

“If you’re here to ask me to protect you, don’t.”

He stopped.

The waves moved in and out between them.

“I took the money,” he said.

Mara closed her eyes.

“I know.”

“I told myself I was borrowing it for forty-eight hours.”

“From your younger daughter’s wedding.”

“From an account you guaranteed,” he said quietly.

That made her turn.

At least he had finally named it correctly.

Robert looked wrecked.

“My business is finished.”

Mara stared at him.

The words should have shocked her.

They did not.

Some part of her had known the family’s polished image was built over rot.

“How long?”

“Two years.”

She laughed once.

Soft.

Empty.

“And you still let Vanessa plan a Hawaii wedding?”

Robert’s eyes filled.

“I thought the wedding would help. Investors. Connections. Adrian’s family. People seeing we were still…”

“Rich?”

He looked down.

“Relevant.”

Mara shook her head.

“You risked my company so people would think you were relevant.”

His face twisted.

“I’m sorry.”

“Are you sorry because you hurt me or because it didn’t work?”

Robert swallowed.

That hesitation answered too much.

Then he whispered, “Both.”

At least it was honest.

Mara looked at the dark water.

“When did you stop seeing me as your daughter?”

Robert flinched.

“I never did.”

“Yes, you did. Somewhere along the way, I became the person who fixed the family so you could keep pretending you still led it.”

His tears fell.

“I was ashamed.”

“So you made me carry it.”

“I know.”

“No,” Mara said. “You don’t. Because if you did, you would have stopped before forging, draining, lying, and letting Vanessa slap me in front of strangers.”

Robert looked broken now.

“Mara, I didn’t know she forged your name.”

“But you knew she was using it.”

He said nothing.

Mara nodded.

There it was again.

The family language.

Silence pretending to be innocence.

Robert reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded paper.

“I signed a statement for Denise.”

Mara looked at it but did not take it.

“What does it say?”

“That I transferred funds from the wedding account to Ellison Imports. That Vanessa knew. That Elaine knew some payments were missing but not all. That I lied to Adrian’s father.”

Mara’s throat tightened.

That statement would help.

It would also destroy him.

“Why?” she asked.

Robert looked out at the ocean.

“Because when Vanessa slapped you, I waited for you to forgive her like always.”

Mara’s eyes burned.

“And?”

“And you didn’t. And I realized I had raised one daughter to break things and another to pay for the damage.”

For the first time that night, Mara could not speak.

Robert placed the statement carefully on the sand between them, far enough that he was not forcing it into her hands.

“I don’t deserve your help.”

“No,” Mara said.

“I don’t deserve your forgiveness.”

“No.”

He nodded.

“But I want you to have the truth.”

Then he turned and walked back toward the resort.

Mara stood there with the paper at her feet, the waves almost reaching it.

For one painful second, she wanted to let the ocean take it.

Instead, she picked it up.

Not for him.

May you like

For herself.

👉 Robert finally confessed, but his statement meant Vanessa could no longer pretend she was only a desperate bride.
