Chapter 2 - The Man Behind the Hood

The hooded man did not run.

That frightened Jack more than if he had.

He remained behind Tommy with his shoulders relaxed and one hand pressed against the inside of his jacket. Rainwater dripped from the hem onto the floor.

Two uniformed officers appeared outside the open bus doors.

“Hands where we can see them,” one shouted.

The hooded man slowly lifted both hands.

The metallic outline beneath his coat shifted.

The nurse recoiled.

Tommy immediately pointed at Jack.

“He attacked me!”

The teenager’s phone swung toward him.

“You grabbed the dog first,” the boy said. “I recorded it.”

Tommy’s face tightened.

“Shut that thing off.”

The driver stood from his seat but stayed behind the protective partition.

“No one is deleting anything,” he said.

Jack barely heard them.

His eyes remained on the metal ring clipped inside the stranger’s jacket.

It was no larger than a quarter.

Blackened steel.

Two crossing lines scored through the center.

A shallow notch at the bottom.

Jack had last seen that symbol eleven years earlier on a locked equipment case in Afghanistan.

The case had belonged to a unit that officially did not exist.

Duke moved closer to Jack’s leg.

His ears remained forward, but his tail was low and still.

Recognition without affection.

Alertness without aggression.

The lead officer climbed onto the bus.

“What’s inside the jacket?”

The hooded man’s expression stayed calm.

“A folding utility knife.”

“Remove it with two fingers.”

The man obeyed.

The knife was small, legal in size, and closed.

The nurse let out a shaky breath.

Tommy seized the moment.

“See? He wasn’t doing anything. This psycho twisted my arm because I touched his mutt.”

Jack looked at him at last.

“You pulled a working dog by the throat.”

“Working for who?”

Jack did not answer.

The second officer entered and took the knife.

The lead officer gestured toward the metal ring.

“And that?”

The hooded man glanced at Jack.

“A keepsake.”

“Remove it.”

“No.”

The officer’s posture changed.

Jack saw the stranger calculate the distance to the door, the officers’ footing, the teenager’s position, and Duke’s angle.

Not an amateur.

Not a frightened passenger.

A trained man pretending to be ordinary.

Jack stepped slightly forward.

“Do it.”

The hooded man’s smile faded.

“You always did think the dog listened to you.”

Jack’s stomach tightened.

Tommy looked between them.

“You know each other?”

“No,” Jack said.

The stranger’s eyes stayed on him.

“But we know the same dead men.”

Silence spread through the bus.

Even the rain seemed quieter.

One officer reached toward the ring.

The hooded man caught his wrist.

The movement was fast but controlled.

Jack reacted instantly, stepping between them.

Duke rose onto all four paws.

The stranger released the officer before the situation exploded.

“I said it’s a keepsake.”

“You’re under arrest,” the officer snapped.

“For what?”

“Interfering with an officer and carrying a concealed weapon on public transit.”

The stranger looked almost amused.

The second officer moved behind him and secured his wrists.

Tommy began shouting that he wanted Jack arrested too.

The teenager replayed the opening moments for the lead officer, keeping the screen angled away from everyone else.

The recording showed Tommy jerking Duke’s collar.

It showed Jack controlling the wrist.

It showed no punch, no kick, no repeated strike.

The officer’s tone toward Jack softened.

“You’ll still need to make a statement.”

Jack nodded.

His focus remained on the stranger.

As the police guided the man toward the doors, Duke made a low sound.

Not a growl.

A whine.

Jack had heard it only twice before.

Both times, Duke had been standing near explosives hidden beneath ordinary objects.

The stranger stopped on the first step.

He turned his head just enough to meet Jack’s eyes.

“Check beneath the harness.”

Then he disappeared into the rain.

Jack’s hand moved toward Duke’s chest.

The military-style harness had belonged to Duke for six years.

Jack had inspected every buckle, seam, and strap hundreds of times.

Yet when his fingers pressed beneath the padded section near Duke’s left shoulder, he felt something rigid that had not been there that morning.

May you like

A narrow sealed capsule.

And somebody had stitched it into Duke’s harness without Jack noticing.
