Chapter 15 - The Memory Beneath the Scar

Jack stopped fighting.
Only for a fraction of a second.
Kane used it.
His elbow struck Jack’s ribs and drove him backward into the steel chair.
Michael caught Kane around the waist.
They crashed into the shallow water.
Sarah remained behind the server rack with Emily, her pistol trained but unable to fire without hitting Michael.
“What does he mean?” Jack shouted.
Sarah’s face had gone white.
Elias laughed through split lips.
“She never told you.”
Kane shoved Michael aside and reached for the fallen rifle.
Duke moved between him and the weapon.
No attack.
No bite.
The German Shepherd simply stood over it, eyes locked on Kane.
Kane hesitated.
That hesitation allowed Jack to kick the rifle beneath the server racks.
“Sarah,” Jack said. “What is inside you?”
She pressed one hand against the back of her neck.
“There’s an implant.”
Emily stared at her.
“What kind?”
“I don’t know.”
Elias answered.
“Samuel Harper’s final encryption archive.”
Emily turned toward him.
“My father put it there?”
“No. Sarah did.”
Jack’s breath shortened.
Sarah’s eyes filled.
“After Red Valley, Samuel gave me the Ledger’s compressed core. I couldn’t transmit it. Northstar controlled every military channel.”
“So you put it in your body?”
“A surgeon loyal to Vale implanted it beneath an old scar.”
Vale descended into the chamber.
Blood darkened one sleeve where flying metal had cut her.
“I ordered it removed years ago.”
Sarah looked at her.
“You ordered me contained.”
“I ordered protection.”
“You always rename imprisonment.”
The shutter above tore open.
Boots entered the medical room.
Northstar security.
Daniel dropped into the hatch behind Vale.
“They’re coming.”
Kane rose slowly from the water.
Michael stood opposite him.
Father and son.
Recruiter and weapon.
Neither looked away.
Jack moved beside Duke.
“Open the grate.”
Daniel jammed the steel bar beneath the rusted edge.
Together they lifted it.
A narrow shaft descended into darkness.
Warm air rose from below.
Duke leaned over the opening and inhaled.
Then his ears flattened.
He backed away.
Jack had never seen him refuse a marked route.
“Something’s wrong.”
Elias pulled against his restraints.
“Of course something is wrong. The shaft is wired to erase the Ledger the moment Sarah crosses the sensor.”
Sarah stared into the darkness.
“You built a kill switch.”
“I built insurance.”
Kane looked toward the hatch as armed shadows appeared above.
“We’re out of time.”
Michael picked up the third ring.
“Duke needs this.”
“No,” Jack said. “Duke rejected it.”
“He rejected the shaft.”
“He recognized a threat.”
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“You’re still treating instinct like morality.”
“And you’re still treating loyalty like programming.”
The first Northstar guard dropped into the chamber.
Vale fired into the overhead light.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Shouts erupted.
Emergency lamps flashed red.
Jack felt Sarah grab his jacket.
Emily pulled Elias’s medical line free and began releasing his restraints.
Daniel fought someone near the ladder.
Michael vanished into the moving shadows.
Kane shouted an order.
Duke barked once.
Jack followed the sound and found the dog beside the open grate.
A panel inside the shaft had shifted.
Behind it was a second passage.
Not downward.
Sideways.
The true route.
“Duke found it,” Jack said.
Sarah touched the scar at the back of her neck.
“If I go through there, the implant may activate.”
“Activate how?”
“I don’t know.”
Elias stumbled toward them, one hand pressed over the bleeding needle site in his arm.
“I do.”
Jack seized him by the jacket.
“Then talk.”
“The implant doesn’t merely contain the Ledger. It connects to it.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means Samuel designed the archive to open only when Sarah’s biometric signature matches a second living key.”
Jack looked at Duke.
Elias shook his head.
“Not the dog.”
A gunshot struck the grate.
Kane emerged through the red light, dragging Michael in front of him with a blade against his throat.
Northstar guards filled the chamber behind them.
Vale raised her empty pistol.
Emily backed toward Sarah.
Daniel stood bleeding near the ladder.
Kane’s eyes found Jack.
“Take one more step and my son dies.”
Michael’s expression remained unreadable.
“Don’t listen to him.”
Kane pressed the blade closer.
Elias laughed bitterly.
“He spent years pretending not to care about the boy.”
“I don’t,” Kane said.
Michael closed his eyes.
Jack looked from Sarah to Elias.
“Who is the second living key?”
Elias smiled.
“That is why they kept me alive.”
Sarah shook her head.
“No. Samuel hated you.”
“He did.”
“Then he would never have used your body.”
“He didn’t.”
Elias turned toward Emily.
The chamber seemed to narrow around her.
Emily’s lips parted.
“My father?”
“Samuel built the Ledger around his own bloodline,” Elias said. “You are the second key.”
A metallic click sounded inside Sarah’s neck.
She gasped and collapsed against Jack.
Every server in the chamber powered on at once.
Rows of hidden files appeared across the monitors.
Names.
Payments.
Operations.
Hundreds of identities.
Then one photograph expanded across the central screen.
Jack stared at it.
The image showed Red Valley eleven years earlier.
Sarah stood beside Samuel Harper.
Rebecca Vale stood behind them.
And between Vale and Elias was another man wearing Jack’s face.
Not resembling him.
Identical.
The date beneath the photograph was three years before Jack had supposedly joined the unit.
Sarah lifted her head weakly and saw the screen.
Her expression broke.
“That isn’t Jack.”
May you like
Duke turned away from Jack and fixed his amber eyes on the man in the photograph.
Then, for the first time in eleven years, he lowered his body into the recognition posture reserved for his original handler.
