Chapter 13 - the choice no mother should hear

“Give it to the baby.”

My father answered immediately.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Dad—”

“We find another way.”

“There isn’t time.”

Dr. Marshall explained in a shaking voice.

The synthetic drug attached differently to adult and fetal clotting proteins. A full antidote dose could stabilize my daughter but trigger catastrophic clotting in my bloodstream.

A reduced dose might protect me but fail to reach her.

There was no reliable calculation because Marshall had never tested the compound on a pregnant woman.

I was the experiment.

Sylvia had allowed it.

David had approved it.

“You knew?” I asked him.

He looked at the floor.

“Marshall said the risk was manageable.”

“You knew.”

“I didn’t know Sylvia would push you that hard.”

“You watched her do it.”

His eyes lifted.

For the first time, genuine emotion reached his face.

“I panicked.”

“You smashed my phone.”

“To complete the authentication capture.”

“You chose the plan.”

“I thought you would recover.”

I laughed once, painfully.

“That is what cowards call love after the person survives.”

Grandmother moved beside Dr. Marshall.

“There may be another option.”

My mother had designed an emergency reversal protocol for exposure to early versions of the compound. It required a second agent stored with the original gate key as part of a chemical-security package.

The second half was hidden inside Dad’s medal.

Daniel opened the medal case.

Dad grabbed his wrist.

“If you assemble the key, the gate activates.”

“If we don’t, Anna’s child may die.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Choose correctly once in your life.”

Dad released him.

Daniel opened the medal’s hollow base.

Inside was a glass capsule and a narrow strip of metal.

Dr. Marshall examined the capsule.

“This could work.”

“Could?” I asked.

“It may allow us to use a lower antidote dose safely.”

He began preparing the injection.

Rebecca moved toward the locator fragment.

Grandmother saw her.

“Don’t.”

Rebecca fired.

The bullet struck the wall beside Grandmother.

Dad tackled Rebecca before she fired again.

Daniel grabbed the fragment.

Sylvia seized the property papers and ran toward the back door.

David blocked her.

“Give me those.”

She stared at her son.

“I did everything for you.”

“You did it for control.”

“You were nothing before I made you useful.”

David’s face hardened.

He tore the documents from her hand.

For one second, I thought he might destroy them.

Instead, he folded them into his coat.

He still wanted the assets.

Even now.

Dr. Marshall injected the first medication into my IV.

Heat spread through my arm.

My chest tightened.

The fetal monitor inside the portable unit accelerated.

Dad pinned Rebecca against the floor while Daniel fitted the two metal fragments together.

A green light appeared.

The gate key was active.

Every phone in the room lit simultaneously.

The house alarm activated.

A hidden panel opened behind the fireplace, revealing a secure communications terminal installed decades earlier.

Voss had never needed physical access to the corridor outside.

The original gate terminal was inside my grandmother’s house.

Daniel stared at it.

“This was here the whole time.”

Grandmother looked toward the screen.

“Elizabeth built it.”

The terminal requested biometric confirmation.

AUTHORIZED DESCENDANT REQUIRED.

Everyone looked at me.

The system had been designed to recognize my mother’s genetic line.

My blood could unlock it.

That was the reason Grandmother let David remain close.

She believed exposing the network required me.

The conspiracy had not merely chosen me because of property.

I was the final authentication factor.

Dr. Marshall prepared the second injection.

My heart rhythm became irregular.

“Anna, stay awake.”

David moved toward the terminal.

“If her hand touches that scanner, we can access the network.”

Dad raised his gun.

“You will not use her.”

Daniel aimed his weapon at Dad.

“We need the evidence inside.”

Rebecca struggled beneath him.

Sylvia reached for a fallen gun.

Grandmother stepped between them all.

“Anna decides.”

I looked at the terminal.

Inside it might be proof of my mother’s murder, Voss’s network, Daniel’s crimes, Rebecca’s betrayal, and David’s plan.

It might also give them access to national systems.

My daughter’s heartbeat weakened through the monitor.

I pressed my bleeding thumb against the scanner.

The terminal unlocked.

A message appeared.

WELCOME, ANNA ELIZABETH COLE. MATERNAL CONTINGENCY INITIATED.
