Chapter 12 - the grandmother who watched me suffer

“Grandma?”

The word left me like a child’s cry.

Evelyn stopped halfway down the staircase.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Annie.”

I wanted to run to her.

I also wanted to demand how she could stand there while my life bled apart.

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

“You let me bury you.”

“I had no choice.”

“There is always a choice.”

Her face tightened.

She continued down the stairs.

Daniel looked furious.

“You were supposed to remain hidden.”

“You were supposed to protect Anna.”

“I protected the mission.”

“You became the mission.”

Sylvia reached for the transfer papers.

Evelyn slapped her hand away.

The movement was fast despite her age.

“You don’t touch my granddaughter again.”

Sylvia stared at her.

“You paid me.”

“I paid you to observe David.”

The room fell silent.

My grandmother had known David approached me under false pretenses.

She discovered his connection to Voss shortly before our engagement.

Instead of warning me, she created a covert financial account and paid Sylvia to report Daniel’s plans.

Sylvia accepted the money.

Then she betrayed both sides.

She fed Evelyn selective information while helping David gain control of my assets.

“You knew who he was before I married him,” I said.

Grandmother looked at me.

“I suspected.”

“You watched me walk down the aisle.”

“I needed to know who controlled him.”

“You used me.”

“To reach the people who killed your mother.”

My hand moved protectively over my belly.

“And now they nearly killed my daughter.”

The accusation struck her harder than anger.

She looked toward Dr. Marshall.

“Give Anna the antidote.”

Sylvia raised her chin.

“No signature, no treatment.”

Evelyn took the second recording from her coat.

“This proves who caused Elizabeth’s crash.”

Every person in the room focused on it.

There was the real currency.

Not property.

Not money.

Truth.

Evelyn inserted the device into an old player beside the fireplace.

My mother’s voice returned through static.

“The aircraft has been sabotaged. Rebecca says the hydraulic warning is false, but the controls are failing.”

Rebecca’s face went pale.

Dad looked at her.

“You told us you weren’t on the plane.”

“I wasn’t.”

The recording continued.

A man’s voice came through the cockpit radio.

“Elizabeth, maintain course. Do not divert.”

Dad whispered, “That’s Daniel.”

Daniel shook his head.

“The recording was altered.”

Then another transmission entered.

My grandmother’s voice.

“Land at the private field. I can protect Anna only if Michael believes you are dead.”

My mother answered, “You promised this wouldn’t endanger the crew.”

An alarm sounded.

The recording jumped.

A final male voice said, “Proceed with termination.”

David looked toward Sylvia.

Sylvia looked at Rebecca.

The voice belonged to Gregory Voss.

Voss had ordered the sabotage.

But the crash was not supposed to kill my mother.

Grandmother had planned a staged disappearance.

Something went wrong.

The plane went down before reaching the private field.

My mother died.

Grandmother blamed herself.

She spent years building a network to expose Voss, Daniel, Rebecca, and the officials behind the gate abuse.

She faked her death after Voss discovered she was still investigating.

“Why not go to Dad?” I asked.

“Because Michael’s office was compromised.”

She looked at Rebecca.

“By the woman standing beside him.”

Rebecca aimed her weapon at Grandmother.

Dad stepped between them.

Daniel drew his gun.

Sylvia grabbed the antidote case.

David moved toward the documents.

Every alliance broke at once.

I reached for the syringe inside the open case.

Dr. Marshall caught my wrist.

“You don’t know the dose.”

“Then tell me.”

He looked terrified.

Not of me.

Of the others.

“The formula Daniel gave you was incomplete,” he whispered. “The antidote can save the baby, but in your condition it may stop your heart.”

Dad heard him.

So did Grandmother.

There was no safe treatment.
