PART 4: The Phone on the Bed

PART 4: The Phone on the Bed
The police knocks came again.
“Dallas Police Department. Open the door.”
Javier looked toward the hallway like he was calculating distance.
Colonel Brooks noticed.
“Don’t,” he said.
One word.
Flat.
Controlled.
Javier stopped.
Carmen recovered first. She lifted her chin and smoothed the front of her silver gown as if the police had arrived for someone else.
“This is a family matter,” she snapped.
Colonel Brooks did not look at her.
He kept his body between Sofia and the doorway.
Elena reached for her daughter’s hand.
Sofia’s fingers were ice cold.
“Mom,” she whispered. “Please don’t let them take me.”
“No one is taking you,” Elena said.
Her voice shook, but her arms did not.
Colonel Brooks opened the door.
Two officers stood in the hall. Behind them, a building security guard looked pale and wide-eyed.
The older officer glanced past Alexander’s shoulder and saw Sofia on the bed.
His expression changed immediately.
“Ma’am, do you need medical assistance?”
Sofia tried to speak.
Nothing came out.
Elena answered for her.
“Yes.”
Carmen stepped forward.
“She fell.”
The room went dead silent.
Even Javier looked at his mother.
Carmen kept going.
“She was hysterical. Brides get emotional. She drank too much champagne, embarrassed herself, ran out of the hotel, and now her parents are trying to blame us because she regrets the marriage.”
Elena’s face twisted with disbelief.
“You evil—”
Alexander lifted one hand slightly.
Elena stopped.
Not because she wasn’t angry.
Because she trusted him.
The younger officer looked at Sofia’s bruised arms.
Then at her split lip.
Then at the torn dress.
“Mrs…?”
Sofia swallowed.
“Brooks,” she whispered.
Javier flinched.
The officer noticed that too.
“Sofia Brooks,” she said, stronger this time. “I haven’t changed my name.”
Carmen’s eyes narrowed.
The older officer stepped inside.
“Can you tell us what happened?”
Javier moved closer.
“She’s confused.”
Colonel Brooks turned his head slowly.
“Take one more step toward my daughter.”
Javier stopped again.
This time, his panic showed.
Carmen pointed at Alexander.
“Are you threatening my son?”
“No,” Alexander said. “I’m giving him the clearest instruction he’ll receive tonight.”
The officer looked down and saw the crumpled papers near the doorway.
“What are those?”
No one answered.
So Elena did.
“Condo transfer documents they tried to force her to sign on her wedding night.”
Carmen laughed sharply.
“That is ridiculous.”
The officer bent and picked them up with gloved hands.
Javier’s mouth opened.
Carmen touched his wrist.
A warning.
Too late.
The officer scanned the first page.
Then the second.
His brow tightened.
“These appear to be property transfer forms.”
“They’re unsigned,” Carmen said quickly. “So there’s no crime.”
Colonel Brooks looked at her.
For the first time that night, something close to a smile touched his mouth.
It was not warm.
“No crime?” he repeated.
The older officer asked Sofia again, gently, “Did someone hurt you because you refused to sign these?”
Sofia’s breathing hitched.
She stared at Javier.
For months she had protected him from her parents’ doubts.
Protected the engagement.
Protected the wedding.
Protected the fantasy that love could fix the sick feeling in her stomach.
But he had stood outside that hotel door.
He had heard his mother hit her.
He had done nothing.
Sofia lifted her shaking hand and pointed.
“Carmen hit me,” she whispered. “Javier blocked the door. He took my phone. He told me I couldn’t leave until I signed.”
Javier exploded.
“That’s not true!”
The younger officer stepped in front of him.
“Sir, lower your voice.”
Carmen’s face flushed.
“She is lying!”
That was when Colonel Brooks lifted Elena’s phone.
The screen was still glowing.
Carmen stared at it.
Javier stared harder.
Alexander looked at the officers.
“My wife called 911 before they entered the bedroom,” he said. “The line stayed open.”
Carmen’s lips parted.
“The dispatcher heard everything,” Alexander said.
The older officer’s expression hardened.
Outside, sirens began to rise below the high-rise.
Sofia closed her eyes.
For the first time all night, she felt the smallest breath of air enter her lungs.
Javier whispered, “Mom…”
Carmen did not answer.
Because her own voice had already convicted her.

She still owes this family that condo.
👉 Carmen thought Sofia’s bruises could be explained away—but she had no idea her own words were already recorded.
