PART 3: The Papers by the Door

PART 3: The Papers by the Door
Sofia did not scream when she saw the folder.
She went cold.
That was what fear did to her first.
It made the room quiet.
Javier led her into the bridal suite like nothing was wrong. The hotel room was covered with flowers. White roses. Champagne. Gold ribbon. A heart made of petals on the bed.
It looked romantic.
Until Carmen placed the folder on the table.
“Sign it,” she said.
Sofia stared at her.
“Excuse me?”
Carmen’s smile was gone now. There were no guests. No cameras. No priest. No Elena standing close enough to interrupt.
Just Sofia, Javier, Carmen, and the soft click of the suite door closing behind them.
Javier loosened his tie.
“Sofia, don’t make this dramatic.”
“My condo?”
“Our condo,” Carmen corrected.
Sofia turned to Javier.
“You promised we were done talking about this.”
“I promised we wouldn’t fight about it,” he said. “That’s different.”
Sofia’s heart began to pound.
The papers were thick. Too thick for a simple form. Her name was printed everywhere. Javier’s name was printed beside hers. Carmen’s name appeared on a separate page.
Sofia reached for the folder.
Carmen slapped her hand away.
“Don’t wrinkle it.”
Sofia stepped back.
“Why is your name on this?”
Carmen lifted her chin.
“Family management trust.”
Sofia looked at Javier.
“You told me it would only be us.”
Javier’s eyes hardened.
“My mother knows how to handle assets.”
“My home is not an asset to handle.”
Carmen laughed once.
“Your home? Sweetheart, your father gave you a soldier’s pride and a child’s understanding of money.”
Sofia turned toward the door.
Javier moved in front of it.
That was when the fear became real.
Not anger.
Fear.
“Move,” Sofia said.
Javier lowered his voice.
“Sign it first.”
“No.”
Carmen stepped closer.
The silver gown glittered in the soft light as she looked Sofia up and down in her wedding dress.
“All that lace. All that money spent. All those people celebrating you.” Her mouth twisted. “And you still want to act like a selfish little girl?”
Sofia’s hands shook.
“I’m calling my parents.”
Javier grabbed her phone from the table.
Sofia lunged for it.
Carmen caught the side of her dress and yanked.
The lace tore.
The sound was small.
But it changed everything.
Sofia looked down at the ripped fabric.
Her mother’s careful hands had buttoned that dress.
Her father had cried when he saw her in it.
Something inside her broke.
Then Carmen struck her.
Not hard enough to knock her down at first.
Hard enough to tell her the rules had changed.
Sofia stumbled.
Javier did not move.
She looked at him, stunned.
“Javier…”
He looked away.
Carmen hit her again.
This time Sofia fell against the table, knocking over a vase. Water spilled across the contracts. Carmen cursed and grabbed the folder, shaking it dry.
“You stupid girl!”
Sofia tried to reach the hallway.
Javier caught her arm.
His fingers dug deep enough to bruise.
“Stop fighting,” he hissed.
“Let go of me.”
“Then sign.”
Carmen shoved a pen at her.
Sofia’s lip was bleeding now. Her dress was torn. Her hands were trembling so badly she could barely stand.
But she looked at the line where her name was supposed to go.
And she whispered, “No.”
Carmen’s face changed.
It was not rage anymore.
It was punishment.
What happened next came in pieces.
A hand in Sofia’s hair.
Her shoulder hitting the wall.
Javier standing by the door.
Carmen’s voice saying, “Your parents won’t save you forever.”
Sofia remembered crawling for the hotel key card that had fallen near the bed.
She remembered Javier stepping aside only when Carmen told him to check the hallway.
She remembered seeing the door open just enough.
And she ran.
Barefoot.
Bleeding.
Still in the ruined dress.
Through the hallway.
Into the elevator.
Down through the lobby while the night staff stared in horror.
She did not go to a hospital.
She did not go to the police.
Fear chose the one place her body still understood as safe.
Her parents’ apartment.
At 3:02 a.m., Elena opened the door and saw her daughter standing there in the wedding dress.
Sofia whispered, “Mom… his mother beat me because I refused to sign over my condo.”
Then she collapsed.
And twenty minutes later, while Colonel Brooks was still kneeling in front of her, the apartment door flew open.
Javier had followed her.
Carmen had followed him.

And the unsigned papers had followed them too.
👉 Sofia escaped the hotel with her life—but Javier and Carmen made one mistake when they brought the papers into her father’s home.
