Chapter 8

A week later, Riley walked back onto the same desert range.
This time, no one laughed.
No one called her sweetheart.
No one told her to step back.
The soldiers stood straighter when she passed.
Some looked ashamed.
A few looked inspired.
One young female recruit near the back watched Riley like she was seeing a door open that had always been locked.
Riley noticed her.
She stopped.
The recruit quickly looked away.
Riley stepped closer.
“You shoot?”
The recruit hesitated.
“I’m trying to, ma’am.”
Riley glanced toward the long range.
“Then don’t let anyone make you waste your first shot proving you deserve to stand there.”
The recruit looked up.
Riley’s voice softened.
“Stand there because you do.”
The recruit nodded, eyes shining.
Riley walked to the firing mat.
Senior Chief Row called the line ready.
Lieutenant Commander Reyes watched from the tower.
The steel target waited beyond the heat.
Riley lowered herself behind the rifle.
The compass patch sat on her shoulder now.
The tattoo rested against the stock.
She breathed once.
May you like
Found north.
And this time, when the rifle cracked across the desert, nobody doubted the woman behind it.
