Chapter 6

Maddox’s eyes hardened.
“You did.”
“No,” Riley said. “Captain Hail was hit. I dragged him behind cover. I held pressure on his wound until the extraction team arrived.”
Her voice shook once.
Then steadied again.
“You wrote that I froze because you needed someone to blame for losing the route.”
Maddox took a step toward her.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Senior Chief Row moved between them.
But Riley did not step back.
“I know Captain Hail died with my hand in his,” she said. “I know his last words were not about failure.”
Her eyes locked on Maddox.
“They were about truth.”
The range was silent again.
A different silence now.
Not doubt.
Not tension.
Recognition.
Reyes removed one final page from the folder.
“Nightfall Command reopened the Kadir Valley file after discovering altered training reports, missing video logs, and falsified psychological evaluations.”
Maddox’s face lost color.
“The review found that Gunnery Sergeant Maddox suppressed Captain Hail’s recommendation and attempted to block Riley Carter from all advanced selection pipelines.”
The words hit the range one by one.
Suppressed.
Blocked.
Falsified.
Maddox looked around, searching for support.
He found none.
Even the men who laughed at Riley would not meet his eyes.
Reyes stepped closer.
“You weren’t protecting the program,” she said. “You were protecting your pride.”
Maddox’s voice dropped.
“She doesn’t belong in Hail’s place.”
Riley’s expression changed.
Something broke open behind her eyes.
Not weakness.
Grief.
“I’m not trying to take his place.”
She touched the compass tattoo.
“I’m trying to finish what he believed in.”
For the first time, Maddox had no answer.
Reyes turned to the range officer.
“Gunnery Sergeant Maddox is relieved of evaluation authority, effective immediately.”
Maddox stared.
“You can’t do that.”
“I already did.”
Reyes handed the folder to an investigator standing behind her.
“Formal proceedings will begin for falsification of records, abuse of authority, and obstruction of a classified recommendation.”
Maddox’s mouth opened.
