Chapter 7

Caleb looked at General Hollis.

The general did not hide behind rank.

He did not soften the truth.

“We failed you,” Hollis said. “We failed the men who died beside you. And today, in front of everyone who watched you be humiliated, I say this clearly: you are not a traitor. You are the reason the traitors were caught.”

The hall erupted.

But this applause was different.

It was not polished.

It was not official.

It was thunderous.

Raw.

Human.

Soldiers stood.

Families stood.

Even the reporters lowered their cameras for a moment.

Caleb looked down at the medal still pinned to his chest.

The little scratch on its edge caught the light.

For weeks, it had been bait.

Now it was evidence.

And soon, it would be something else.

A reminder.

Justice did not bring back Mason.

It did not erase the desert.

It did not give Caleb back the nights he lost to nightmares or the friends buried under folded flags.

But it gave the truth a voice.

And sometimes, that was the first thing grief needed before it could become peace.

Three months later, Marcus Hale was sentenced in a military-connected federal case that destroyed every powerful name protecting him.

His two associates took deals.

More arrests followed.

A whole network collapsed.

The official record of Operation Nightglass was corrected.

The fallen soldiers were honored publicly.

Their families were told the truth.

And Caleb stood beside them, not as the man who survived by luck, but as the witness who refused to let their deaths become a lie.
