Chapter 3

The hall erupted.
Reporters shouted questions.
Soldiers stood from their seats.
The MPs hesitated for the first time.
Then the rear doors slammed open.
A woman in a dark dress uniform entered with six military investigators behind her.
Colonel Evelyn Shaw.
Head of Army Counterintelligence.
Every camera turned toward her.
She walked down the aisle without rushing.
Her eyes were fixed on the MPs holding Caleb.
“Release him.”
The MP officer stiffened.
“Ma’am, we have orders.”
“So do I.”
She held up a sealed warrant.
Then she looked across the hall at the men in black suits.
“He wasn’t the target,” she said. “He was the witness.”
Marcus Hale’s smile vanished.
The two men beside him went pale.
Caleb slowly turned his head toward them.
For three months, the world thought Caleb Vance had been the only survivor because he was lucky.
That was a lie.
He survived because someone needed him to carry the blame.
The mission had been called Operation Nightglass.
It was supposed to be simple.
Retrieve a captured American asset.
Destroy a hidden weapons server.
Leave before sunrise.
But the enemy was waiting before Caleb’s team even crossed the ridge.
They knew the route.
They knew the extraction point.
They knew the radio codes.
By the time Caleb realized they had been betrayed, the first vehicle was already burning.
His best friend, Mason Reed, died trying to pull the radio from the wreckage.
Lieutenant Carver bled out with Caleb’s hands pressed against his chest.
And in the middle of the chaos, Caleb saw something he was never supposed to see.
A man in a black suit standing beyond the smoke.
Not enemy militia.
Not local police.
American.
Caleb only saw him for three seconds.
May you like
But three seconds was enough.
