Military police rushed forward.
Torres looked up at Harris, desperate.
“Commander, she’s a ghost story! She has no authority here!”
Harris took the file from Ava and opened the final page.
His expression changed.
Slowly.
Completely.
There was a command seal at the bottom.
Authorization from Special Operations Command.
Ava Ryder had not returned as a lost soldier.
She had returned as the lead witness in a classified investigation.
And Torres had just confessed with his own panic.
Harris looked down at him.
“Sergeant Marco Torres, you are relieved of duty.”
Torres shook his head.
“No. No, this is a setup.”
Harris’ voice rose.
“You will surrender your weapon and submit to custody pending charges of treason, conspiracy, falsification of military records, and the murder of American service members.”
That word broke something in the yard.
Murder.
Not mistake.
Not bad intel.
Murder.
The MPs pulled Torres to his feet.
He looked at Ava one last time.
Hatred and terror fought across his face.
“You should’ve stayed dead.”
Ava stepped closer.
“I tried.”
Then she raised her voice for everyone.

“But my team deserved the truth more than you deserved comfort.”
