Chapter 1

The woman came out of the desert like a ghost.
No truck.
No escort.
No radio call.
Just one figure walking through the dust toward Forward Operating Base Ironwood, wearing faded combat gear, a torn desert hood, and boots that looked like they had crossed hell itself.
At first, the soldiers on the west gate thought she was a mirage.
Then she got closer.
Blonde hair tied back in a messy knot.
Face streaked with sand and dried blood.
A rifle slung across her chest.
A black geometric tattoo running down her forearm like a symbol from a unit nobody talked about anymore.
By the time she reached the center yard, half the base had stopped moving.
Nobody knew her.
Nobody recognized her patch.
And that was when Sergeant Marco Torres stepped in front of her.
Torres loved an audience.
He was the kind of man who smiled only when someone else looked small.
He walked right up to the woman.
Then he shoved her hard in the shoulder.
The woman stumbled back half a step.
But she did not fall.
A few soldiers laughed.
Torres smirked.
“Take that hood off, freak.”
The woman slowly lifted her eyes.
Cold.
Calm.
Empty of fear.

“You should lower your voice,” she said.
