Chapter 8

Dalton turned to the MPs.
“Sergeant Maddox Cole, you are relieved of duty pending investigation for falsifying maintenance records, intimidation, negligence, and obstruction.”
Cole looked around, desperate.
The soldiers who laughed at Kira fifteen minutes earlier would not meet his eyes.
The armory had turned against him.
Not because Kira embarrassed him.
Because she exposed him.
The MPs took Cole by the arms.
He resisted for one second.
Then saw the cameras.
The witnesses.
The signature.
The damaged weapons.
Private Ellis’s bandaged hand.
And Lieutenant Blackwell standing beside the table her father used to work on.
Cole stopped fighting.
As they led him away, he looked back at Kira.
“This won’t bring him back.”
Kira’s face went still.
“No,” she said. “But it may save someone else’s father.”
The door closed behind him.
For a long moment, no one spoke.
Then one of the soldiers who had laughed earlier stepped forward.
He looked ashamed.
“Lieutenant,” he said, “I’m sorry.”
Kira looked at him.
He was young.
Too young to understand how dangerous silence could be.
So she gave him the truth, not comfort.
“Sorry doesn’t fix weapons,” she said. “Accountability does.”
He nodded.
“Yes, ma’am.”
Then she turned back to the table.
“Pull Rack Seven. Every weapon. Now.”
This time, no one laughed.
Everyone moved.
Fast.
Careful.
