Chapter 1

The armory went quiet the moment Sergeant Maddox Cole saw the name on her uniform.

Blackwell.

He stared at it for half a second.

Then he smiled like he had already decided who she was.

Kira Blackwell stood beside a long metal table covered in disassembled rifles, loose bolts, springs, gas tubes, and oil-stained rags.

Her sleeves were rolled up.

Her hair was tied back.

Her hands rested on a black tool case that looked older than half the weapons in the room.

Behind Sergeant Cole, a dozen male soldiers watched her like she was entertainment.

Some leaned against the racks.

Some crossed their arms.

A few whispered and laughed under their breath.

Cole pointed at the table.

Then he looked Kira up and down.

“They sent us a girl to clean our guns?”

A few soldiers laughed louder this time.

Kira did not move.

She had heard worse.

In training rooms.

In briefing tents.

In hallways where men lowered their voices when she passed.

But this was different.

This was not just an insult.

This was an armory full of weapons that looked wrong.

And every wrong weapon in that room could become a folded flag later.

Cole stepped closer.

“What’s wrong?” he said. “Too delicate for gun oil?”

Kira’s jaw tightened.

Her eyes stayed calm.

Cold.

Focused.

“My orders said inspection.”

Cole laughed.

“Inspection? You?”

He turned toward the men behind him.

“You hear that? She thinks she’s here to inspect us.”

More laughter filled the room.

But Kira’s eyes were already on the table.

An M4 bolt beside the wrong firing pin.

An M249 feed tray with fresh scratches near the hinge.

A gas tube with a hairline crack hidden under carbon buildup.

Her fingers tightened on the black tool case.

Cole noticed.

“Oh, don’t worry,” he said. “You can start with the dirty ones.”

He tossed an oil rag toward her chest.

Kira caught it without looking.

That stopped a few soldiers from laughing.

Only for a second.

Cole’s smile thinned.

“You got something to say?”

Kira set the rag down.

Then she opened the black tool case.

Read Part 2 to find out why Kira’s tools made the whole armory stop laughing.
