Chapter 10

The field stayed quiet.

“Strength is not how much pain you can force someone else to carry.”

Riley paused.

Her voice softened.

“Strength is knowing when someone under you needs help, and being decent enough to give it.”

A soldier in the second row wiped at his eyes quickly.

Riley saw it but did not call him out.

She would never do that.

Not to prove a point.

Not to make herself look strong.

She continued.

“Some people will mistake cruelty for leadership. Don’t follow them. Don’t become them.”

The wind moved dust across the training field.

Riley looked toward the camera pole near the officers’ tent.

The same camera that had caught Briggs’s mistake.

The same camera she had looked into before the truth broke open.

Then she turned back to the soldiers.

“If someone tells you that you’re too weak to belong here, you look them in the eye and remember this.”

She took one step forward.

“You don’t have to become cruel to become strong.”

No one moved.

No one wanted to.

Then Commander Cole started clapping.

Once.

Twice.

Then every soldier joined.

The sound rolled across the field, not like noise, but like justice finally finding its voice.

Riley stood there in the dust.

Ribs healed.

Name cleared.

Mission finished.

She had walked into that ring as bait.

She walked out as proof.

Proof that the smallest person in the field can carry the heaviest truth.

May you like

Proof that silence can be broken.

And proof that sometimes the person they call weak is the only one strong enough to expose the monster everyone else was afraid to name.
