Chapter 1

Five hundred soldiers stood around the dirt fighting ring, waiting to watch Sergeant Briggs break the new girl.
That was what he called her.
The new girl.
Not soldier.
Not specialist.
Not even by her name.
Just the girl.
Riley Carter stood in the center of the training circle with dust on her boots, sweat on her neck, and one hand wrapped loose at her side.
She looked smaller than Briggs.
Everyone could see that.
He was built like a wall, broad shoulders, thick arms, and a jaw clenched with arrogance.
He had been an instructor for years.
And he wore cruelty like a medal.
Riley was quiet.
Too quiet.
That made people underestimate her.
And Briggs loved being underestimated by no one.
He circled her slowly as the crowd watched.
Officers sat in the front row.
Cameras recorded from three angles.
This was supposed to be a combat demonstration for visiting units.
Controlled.
Professional.
Training.
But Briggs had turned it into a public execution.
He looked at Riley and smiled.
“You nervous?”
Riley said nothing.
Briggs raised his voice so the entire field could hear.
“Look at her. Command sends me this little thing and calls it a soldier.”
A few soldiers laughed.
Not many.
Enough to feed him.
Riley’s eyes stayed on him.
Cold.
Still.
Briggs stepped closer.
“You don’t belong in this ring.”
Riley finally spoke.
Her voice was calm.
“I didn’t ask to be here.”
“No,” Briggs said. “But you’re here now.”

Then he attacked.
