Chapter 6 - The Garage

Police searched Daniel and Paige’s house before sunrise.

Claire was not allowed to go.

She waited at the hospital instead while doctors warmed Lily and Mason slowly, checked their feet, and documented everything.

Mason had mild hypothermia.

Lily had frostnip on her toes.

Both children were dehydrated.

Both were exhausted.

Both became visibly distressed when anyone mentioned their parents.

A child protective services worker arrived at 3:40 a.m.

Her name was Andrea Mills.

She spoke softly, wore no perfume, and asked permission before sitting beside Lily.

That mattered.

Lily whispered, “Are we in trouble?”

Andrea shook her head.

“No, honey. Grown-ups are going to figure out how to keep you safe.”

Lily looked at Mason asleep under warm blankets.

“Can Aunt Claire stay?”

Andrea looked at Claire.

Claire was sitting in the corner, still wearing the same snow-wet jeans, eyes red, hands wrapped around a paper cup of coffee she hadn’t touched.

“Yes,” Andrea said. “She can stay.”

At Daniel’s house, officers photographed the garage.

The temperature inside was twenty-three degrees.

The concrete floor was damp from melting snow tracked in by the children.

Two small footprints led from the interior door to the side exit.

A child-sized handprint was visible on the metal door.

There were no coats in the garage.

No shoes.

No blankets.

The space heater was unplugged and stored on a high shelf.

On the inside of the house door, there was a sliding lock installed above a child’s reach.

Daniel claimed it was for “safety.”

The officer asked, “Safety from what?”

Daniel said nothing.

Then investigators found Paige’s deleted videos.

She had recorded punishments before.

Not long clips.

Short ones.

Mason crying in the laundry room.

Lily standing beside the pantry with her hands at her sides while Paige said, “This is what happens when you lie.”

Another video showed Daniel closing the garage door two weeks earlier.

Lily’s voice cried, “It’s dark.”

Daniel’s voice replied, “Then stop being dramatic.”

Paige had deleted the videos.

Not well enough.

The officer who recovered them stared at the screen in silence for a long time.

Then he called Andrea at the hospital.

“We have enough for emergency removal.”

Andrea looked at Lily and Mason asleep side by side.

Then at Claire.

“They will not be going home tonight.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Relief came so hard it hurt.

But emergency safety was only the first step.

By morning, Daniel had already hired an attorney.

Paige’s parents were posting online that Claire had “stolen vulnerable children during a family disagreement.”

The narrative was still trying to survive.

And narratives can hurt children almost as much as the original danger when adults repeat them loudly enough.

Claire knew the fight was not over.

It was just moving from the porch to the courthouse.

👉 The garage proved the children were telling the truth, but Daniel and Paige were about to use money and reputation to claim Claire had manipulated them.
