Chapter 5 - The Call Paige Made First

Paige called 911 before Claire did.

That was the part she thought would save them.

At 1:19 a.m., Paige reported that her children had been abducted by their aunt.

Her voice on the call was breathless and controlled.

“My sister-in-law has been unstable for months. She has been obsessed with my kids. We think she took them.”

The dispatcher asked when she last saw the children.

Paige hesitated.

“About fifteen minutes ago.”

That hesitation would matter later.

Daniel could be heard in the background yelling, “She finally did it. Claire took them.”

The dispatcher asked if there were signs of forced entry.

Paige said no.

The dispatcher asked if the children had coats.

Paige said she didn’t know.

That answer would matter too.

Because if your children are missing in twenty-three-degree weather, you know whether they have coats.

Four minutes later, Claire called 911.

Her voice was different.

Not rehearsed.

Not polished.

Terrified.

“My niece and nephew just ran to my house through the woods. They’re barefoot. They’re freezing. They said their parents locked them in the garage.”

The dispatcher went quiet for half a second.

Then asked, “Are the children with you now?”

“Yes.”

“Are they conscious?”

“Yes, but the little boy’s lips are blue.”

“Keep them warm. Do not rub their skin. Officers and EMS are on the way.”

Claire wrapped Lily and Mason in heated blankets from the dryer.

She placed Mason’s feet against her stomach because she remembered reading that body heat helps.

Lily kept saying, “Please don’t let them come inside.”

Claire stroked her hair.

“I won’t.”

When the first officer arrived, Claire was on the porch holding both children behind her.

That was when Daniel’s SUV came speeding into the driveway.

Paige jumped out with her phone already recording.

Daniel did not run to check Mason’s feet.

He did not ask Lily if she was hurt.

He grabbed the blanket.

“You stole my kids.”

That was the first thing the officer saw.

A father not comforting.

Accusing.

A mother not crying over bare feet.

Recording.

Claire knew then that Paige had planned this.

Maybe not the children escaping.

Maybe not the porch camera.

But the story.

The aunt stole them.

The aunt is unstable.

The parents are victims.

It was a clean lie.

Until Lily spoke.

“They locked us in the garage.”

Daniel’s face changed, fast enough for the officer to notice.

Claire handed over the phone.

The porch video showed what Paige’s performance did not.

Children arriving from the woods.

Bare feet in snow.

No coats.

No adult with them.

No kidnapping.

Only escape.

EMS arrived while Daniel was being cuffed.

Mason began crying when a paramedic touched his foot.

Lily held Claire’s hand so tightly her fingers went numb.

Paige tried to follow the children to the ambulance.

The second officer blocked her.

“I’m their mother.”

The officer looked at her phone.

“Then why were you filming instead of checking if they were freezing?”

Paige had no answer.

Daniel shouted from beside the patrol car.

“Claire did this. She coached them.”

Claire turned toward him.

Her voice was shaking now, but not from fear.

“Daniel, your children ran through frozen woods to get away from you.”

That finally silenced him.

For the first time, he looked at Lily.

She looked away.

And that was when Daniel understood.

May you like

His daughter was more afraid of going home than she had been of running barefoot through the snow.

👉 Paige thought calling first would make her the victim, but the officer noticed what she didn’t do: she never once checked whether her children were safe.
