Chapter 8

PART 8
The deck fell silent again.
Meera turned the notebook so the officers could see the faded entry.
“North Africa. Rescue mission Falcon Harbor. You told command I disobeyed for ego.”
Raskin’s jaw clenched.
“That mission is classified.”
“So is lying about it.”
Mercer removed a sealed envelope from inside his jacket.
Raskin stared at it like it was a weapon.
Maybe it was.
Mercer spoke to the officers around him.
“Before we deployed, the Inspector General’s office reopened the Falcon Harbor file. New drone footage was recovered from allied archives.”
Meera’s throat tightened.
She had not known that.
Mercer continued.
“The footage confirms Chief Kane’s 3,200-meter shot disabled an enemy weapon system moments before it fired on an evacuation helicopter.”
Whispers broke across the deck.
Chief Kane.
Not just Meera.
Not just the woman with the heavy rifle.
A chief.
A record holder.
A shooter whose mission had been erased.
Raskin stepped forward.
“You are revealing classified information on an open deck.”
Mercer’s voice hardened.
“No operational details. Just enough truth to correct a lie.”
Meera looked at Raskin.
For years, she had imagined this moment.
She thought she would feel rage.
Victory.
Something sharp and satisfying.
But all she felt was tired.
Tired of carrying silence for a man who had never carried guilt.
Raskin looked at her with hatred.
“You think one shot makes you a hero?”
Meera’s eyes did not move.
“No, sir. Saving people does.”
The words struck harder than the rifle ever could.
Mercer turned to the ship’s captain, who had just arrived on deck.
May you like
“Captain, General Raskin’s order to remove Chief Kane from active defensive action was recorded. His previous reports are now under investigation.”
Read Part 9 to find out how Raskin lost command on the same deck where he mocked her.
