PART 8: The First Word

PART 8: The First Word
The ICU room was full when Nora reached it.
Too full.
Dr. Hart at the bedside.
Dr. Mason near the monitors.
Two nurses adjusting lines.
A respiratory therapist preparing equipment.
Major Cross at the door, placing one military policeman outside and one inside.
Scout and Echo wriggled in Nora’s arms, desperate to get down.
Caleb’s eyes were still closed, but his face was no longer empty.
His brow tightened.
His fingers flexed.
His breathing fought the machine.
Dr. Hart looked at Nora.
“We’re going to reduce sedation carefully. He may panic. He may not understand where he is.”
Nora nodded, even though terror filled her throat.
“What do I do?”
“Talk to him.”
Nora moved to the bed.
Scout and Echo were placed gently near Caleb’s side, away from the tubes, under the nurse’s careful watch.
Both puppies immediately settled.
Their small bodies pressed against him.
Nora took Caleb’s hand.
“Caleb, it’s Nora. You’re in the hospital. You’re safe.”
His eyelids moved.
“Scout and Echo are here.”
His fingers curled.
“They found it,” she whispered.
Major Cross looked at her.
Nora leaned closer.
“We found the backup.”
Caleb’s eyes opened.
Barely.
A thin line.
Clouded.
Unfocused.
But open.
Nora covered her mouth.
Dr. Hart spoke softly.
“Caleb, don’t try to move. You have a breathing tube. You’re in the ICU.”
Caleb’s eyes rolled slightly, searching.
Nora moved into his line of sight.
“I’m here.”
His eyes found her.
For one second, he looked like a little boy waking from a nightmare.
Then his gaze shifted.
To the puppies.
Scout whined.
Echo licked his hand.
Caleb’s eyes filled with tears.
Dr. Hart checked his response.
“Caleb, if you understand me, squeeze Nora’s hand.”
Weak pressure.
Nora sobbed.
“That’s it. That’s it.”
Dr. Mason looked stunned.
“I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Major Cross stepped closer.
“Sergeant Mercer, this is Major Cross. Do you remember what happened?”
Caleb’s eyes sharpened faintly.
Dr. Hart warned, “Careful. He can’t speak yet.”
Cross nodded.
“Blink once for yes.”
Caleb blinked once.
The room went still.
“Were you meeting me the night of the crash?”
One blink.
Nora’s grip tightened.
“Did someone stop your truck?”
One blink.
Cross’s jaw hardened.
“Was it Ben Larkin?”
Caleb’s eyes moved.
No blink.
“Was Larkin there?”
One blink.
“But not alone?”
One blink.
Cross looked at Nora.
Then asked the question they already feared.
“Was Lieutenant Colonel Voss involved?”
Caleb’s eyes closed.
For a terrifying second, Nora thought he had slipped away.
Then he opened them.
One blink.
Dr. Hart whispered, “Oh God.”
The MP by the door immediately spoke into his radio.
Cross continued, voice low.
“Do you know where the original hard drive is?”
Caleb blinked once.
Nora stared at him.
“You do?”
His fingers twitched toward the puppies.
Echo lifted his head.
Caleb’s eyes moved to Scout.
Then to Echo.
Then to Nora.
Nora did not understand.
Dr. Mason said, “He’s fatigued. We need to stop.”
Caleb’s fingers curled harder around Nora’s hand.
He was trying to tell her.
Nora looked at the puppies.
The puppies.
The scent.
The command.
The training.
“Home?” she whispered.
Caleb blinked once.
Nora’s mind raced.
Home.
Not her apartment.
Not the hospital.
Caleb’s home.
His house near base.
Where Mara’s old training crate still sat in the garage.
Where Scout and Echo had been born.
Nora looked at Cross.
“His house.”
Cross moved instantly.
“I’ll send a team.”
Caleb squeezed Nora’s hand again.
Weak.
Urgent.
Cross stopped.
“What?”
Caleb’s eyes shifted toward Nora.
Then the puppies.
Then back to Cross.
Nora understood before anyone else did.
“He wants them to find it.”
Dr. Mason almost protested.
Dr. Hart stopped him with one look.
Cross stared at Scout and Echo.
“They’re untrained.”
Nora shook her head.
“No. Caleb trained them for this.”
The room held the weight of that truth.
Caleb had planned for the possibility that he would not be able to speak.
He had left a hard drive.
A backup card.
A command phrase.
And two tiny German Shepherd puppies who knew the scent of the evidence everyone else had missed.
Dr. Hart checked Caleb’s vitals.
“He needs rest. Now.”
Nora bent close.
“You did it,” she whispered. “You came back.”
A tear slid from Caleb’s eye.
Scout placed his chin on Caleb’s chest.
Echo curled against his hand.
For the first time since the accident, the ICU did not feel like a room waiting for death.
It felt like a battlefield where the right side had finally gained ground.
But the war outside was moving fast.
Because before Cross’s team reached Caleb’s house, Lieutenant Colonel Voss disappeared from base.

And he took the original hard drive with him.
👉 Caleb woke long enough to identify the men who ambushed him—but the officer behind the cover-up vanished before the final evidence could be recovered.
