Chapter 9
Dane tried to pull away when the MPs grabbed his arms.
“This is a mistake.”
Max barked again.
The old dog stepped between Dane and Elena.
His teeth showed.
Elena touched Max’s collar.
“Easy, boy.”
Dane looked at her then.
Not with anger this time.
With fear.
Because he finally understood.
The woman he had tried to disgrace had survived the fire.
The dog he had dismissed as too old had carried the truth.
And the forty-seven people he had been willing to abandon were now witnesses.
The MPs cuffed Dane.
The metal click was small.
But every soldier heard it.
As they led him away, the teenage boy who had been pulled from the service corridor stood up from his ambulance blanket.
His legs shook.
His voice did too.
“She came back when everyone else said we were gone.”
Dane stopped walking.
The boy pointed at Elena.
“She told us to follow the dog. She said Max knew the way.”
The little girl lifted her burned teddy bear.
“Max saved Teddy too.”
A few soldiers laughed softly through tears.
Even Elena smiled.
Just a little.
General Whitaker turned to the entire yard.
“Let the record show Staff Sergeant Elena Cross acted with courage under extreme conditions, preserved civilian life, protected military personnel, and documented criminal negligence during an active emergency.”
Elena’s eyes filled.
She tried to stand taller.
But her knees finally gave out.
Max pressed against her leg before she could fall.
A medic rushed forward.
“Elena!”
She shook her head.
“I’m okay.”
The medic looked at her burned shoulder.
