Chapter 1

Colonel Dane wanted Elena arrested while the people she had saved were still choking on smoke.
The helicopter blades were still cutting through the gray sky.
Dust whipped across the ruined base.
Ash fell like dirty snow over the ambulance lights.
Forty-seven survivors sat on the ground beside the medical trucks, wrapped in emergency blankets, coughing so hard some of them could barely breathe.
A little girl clung to a soldier’s canteen with both hands.
An old man had soot across his face.
A young mother kept whispering, “She came back for us. She came back.”
But Colonel Victor Dane did not look at any of them.
He looked only at Staff Sergeant Elena Cross.
She stood in the middle of the smoke-covered yard, her uniform torn, her face blackened with ash, one sleeve burned through at the shoulder.
Her hands were shaking.
Not from fear.
From exhaustion.
Beside her stood Max, an aging military K9 with gray around his muzzle and a limp in his back leg.
His fur was singed near one ear.
His chest was heaving.
But his eyes never left Elena.
Colonel Dane pointed straight at her.
“Cuff her now. She disobeyed a direct order.”
The entire yard went silent.

Even the medics stopped moving for half a second.
