Chapter 6 - Helen’s Statement

Helen gave her statement in pieces.

The doctor allowed only short intervals because she was dehydrated, bruised, and exhausted.

Daniel sat beside her.

Sheriff Morgan stood near the wall.

A hospital social worker sat close with a recorder and a legal pad.

Helen’s voice was faint, but her mind was clear.

“Laura came before sunrise,” she said.

Daniel leaned closer.

“She said we were going to breakfast.”

Helen closed her eyes.

“She said Daniel was coming later. She said she wanted to talk before he arrived.”

The sheriff asked gently, “Did Brian come too?”

Helen nodded.

“He drove the pickup behind us.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Helen continued.

“They took me to Old Mill Road. Laura said she wanted to show me where Brian’s new project would begin.”

“The land project?” the sheriff asked.

Helen nodded again.

“I said no. I said the land was not for sale.”

Her breathing hitched.

Daniel took her hand.

“Take your time.”

Helen squeezed once.

“Brian got angry. He said I was ruining their chance. Laura said I was being selfish. I tried to get back in the car.”

Her lips trembled.

“Laura took my phone.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Helen went on.

“I walked away from them. I was scared. I didn’t see the edge.”

The room became still.

“I fell.”

The social worker’s pen stopped for half a second.

Helen’s eyes filled.

“I called for help. Brian looked down. Laura looked down.”

Daniel’s face drained.

“They saw you?”

Helen nodded.

“Laura said, ‘She won’t be a problem anymore.’”

Daniel’s heart slammed against his ribs.

The group chat message.

Not a joke.

Not a mistake.

A repeat.

Helen whispered, “Brian said they should leave before anyone saw the trucks. Laura said she would tell people I wandered.”

Sheriff Morgan’s face went hard.

“Did they attempt to help you?”

“No.”

“Did they call emergency services?”

“No.”

“Did they leave you there?”

Helen’s eyes turned to Daniel.

“Yes.”

Daniel bowed his head over her hand.

For the first time since finding her, he cried.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just broken.

Helen lifted two fingers and touched his hair like he was still her little boy.

“I tried to climb,” she whispered. “I knew you would come if you knew.”

“I should have known sooner.”

“No,” she said. “They worked hard so you wouldn’t.”

Sheriff Morgan stepped into the hallway after the statement and made two calls.

One to the prosecutor.

One to deputies at Laura and Brian’s house.

Search warrant preparation.

Vehicle preservation.

Phone seizure request.

Welfare and elder abuse investigation.

Inside the room, Helen looked at Daniel.

“Don’t let them sell it.”

“The land?”

She nodded.

“Your father died keeping it.”

Daniel wiped his face.

“They won’t touch it.”

Helen closed her eyes.

May you like

For the first time all day, she slept.

👉 Helen’s statement turned Laura’s story from neglect into abandonment, and Brian’s land deal became the reason everything happened.
