Chapter 1 - The Pit Beside the Dirt Road

Daniel Parker heard his sister’s voice through the speaker while he was staring down at their mother in a hole.

“Mom is safe with me,” Laura said.

The words came out smooth.

Cold.

Practiced.

Daniel’s black sedan sat crooked on the dirt road behind him, driver’s door still open, engine still running.

He had run so fast from the car that one of his shoes was half-covered in dust.

Ahead of him, the dry pit opened in the ground like a wound.

At the bottom, Helen Parker lay curled against the cracked dirt in a white floral dress smeared with mud. Her silver hair was tangled. Her lips were dry. One hand clawed weakly at the dirt wall as if she had tried to climb until her strength was gone.

Daniel’s face went gray.

“Mom!”

Laura kept talking through the phone.

“Daniel, I told you. She’s resting.”

Daniel dropped to his knees at the edge of the pit.

“Helen Parker!” he shouted, voice breaking. “Mom, hold on!”

Helen’s eyes fluttered.

For one terrible second, Daniel thought she didn’t know him.

Then her lips moved.

“Danny…”

The childhood name almost split him open.

He lowered his phone into the pit, using the flashlight to see her more clearly.

That was when the screen lit up.

Family group chat.

A photo Laura had posted that morning.

New living room furniture.

Brian, Laura’s husband, standing beside a red pickup in the driveway.

And one older message from Laura that Daniel had never noticed.

She won’t be a problem anymore.

Daniel stopped breathing.

His mother’s voice came from below, small and broken.

“Laura left me here.”

The phone nearly slipped from Daniel’s hand.

He lifted it, recorded the pit, Helen’s condition, the location marker, and the message thread. Then he sent everything to the local sheriff’s office contact his mother’s neighbor had given him.

Inside the sheriff’s station, Deputy Carter opened the video.

The sheriff stood from his desk so fast his chair rolled backward.

“Get me that address.”

Back on the dirt road, Daniel tried to reach down.

“Mom, I’m coming. I’m not leaving you.”

In the distance, sirens began to rise.

Then Daniel’s phone vibrated.

Laura Calling.

He looked at the name.

Then down at his mother.

He answered.

Laura’s voice came through, no longer smooth.

“Daniel… where are you?”

Daniel stared straight ahead, eyes red with fury.

“At the place you left our mother to die.”

👉 Laura thought Daniel was too far away to return in time, but he had already found the one place she never expected him to search.
