Chapter 14 - The Two Names on the Navigation Lock

Ryan and I ran toward the upper helm.

Gunfire snapped across the rail behind us.

He placed one hand at my back.

I flinched so violently that he pulled it away.

“Do not touch me.”

“I was trying to keep you from falling.”

“You lost the right to say that.”

We climbed the narrow stairs.

Daniel crouched beside the navigation console, blood still soaking the bandage around his arm.

A biometric panel glowed red.

“Clara’s handprint,” he said. “Ryan’s voice code.”

I pressed my palm against the glass.

The system scanned.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED: CLARA MERCER.

Ryan leaned toward the microphone.

“Ryan Hale.”

VOICE PATTERN REJECTED.

He stared.

“Again,” Daniel said.

Ryan repeated his name.

Rejected.

The yacht continued moving.

Fifteen yards to the marker.

“Why doesn’t it recognize me?” Ryan demanded.

Daniel checked the security file.

“Because Ryan Hale is not the registered identity.”

Ryan’s face hardened.

“What is?”

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Ryan Michael Mercer.”

I stared at my husband.

“Mercer?”

Ryan looked genuinely shocked.

“I have never used that name.”

Below us, Helen climbed the stairs.

She held the black phone.

“Your birth certificate was sealed.”

Ryan turned on her.

“Why?”

“Because Michael Hale is not your biological father.”

The revelation did not surprise me anymore.

Nothing did.

Ryan’s mouth opened, but no sound came.

Helen continued.

“Your mother had an affair with Thomas Mercer.”

My father.

The deck seemed to tilt beneath me.

Ryan was my husband.

Possibly my half brother.

My stomach turned.

Helen saw my face.

“No. Thomas was not Clara’s biological father.”

Relief and horror collided.

“Then who was?”

“I still do not know.”

Ryan gripped the console.

“You are saying Thomas Mercer was my father.”

“Yes.”

“And Clara inherited everything.”

“Because Thomas named her.”

Ryan laughed once, empty and broken.

“All this time, Leonard told me she stole my life.”

Helen lowered her eyes.

“He wanted you angry enough to destroy her.”

The screen prompted again.

VOICE IDENTITY REQUIRED.

Daniel pointed at Ryan.

“Use the registered name.”

Ryan leaned toward the microphone.

“Ryan Michael Mercer.”

IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

The navigation lock disengaged.

Daniel grabbed the controls and pulled the yacht away from the waypoint.

The vessel turned sharply.

Everyone below lost balance.

Leonard’s armed men on the pier shouted as the cables snapped from the rail.

The yacht moved back into open water.

The red marker passed harmlessly to our right.

For one second, we believed we had won.

Then Leonard’s voice came through the intercom.

“The marker was not the trigger.”

A digital timer appeared on every yacht screen.

02:00.

Two minutes.

Daniel typed frantically.

“What activates it?”

Leonard laughed softly.

“Clara’s recorder.”

I looked down at my necklace.

The red light continued blinking.

Helen grabbed it.

“Do not remove it.”

“Why?”

“The fetal monitor is linked to Locker Three.”

“And the bomb is linked to the transmission.”

Daniel stared at the data.

“He built a feedback trigger. If the recorder stops, the explosive arms immediately. If it continues, the timer runs.”

Ryan looked toward the water.

“Then we have two minutes to reach the tunnel.”

Below, Emily unbound herself using the broken champagne stem. Vanessa helped her toward the life raft release line.

The consortium’s leader shouted from the pier.

“We can hold the shooters for ninety seconds.”

My mother’s helicopter circled above us.

She spoke through Ryan’s phone.

“Clara, enter the tunnel and reach the marina vault. The red envelope contains the disarm code.”

“How long is the tunnel?”

“Three hundred yards.”

“I am seven months pregnant and injured.”

“I know.”

“You knew all of this could happen.”

“No,” she said. “I knew Leonard would eventually force a choice.”

“What choice?”

“Between the foundation and your child.”

The timer reached 01:31.

Helen grabbed my shoulders.

“Listen to me. I authorized the plane repair because Margaret asked me to.”

My mother’s voice cut in.

“Helen.”

“No more secrets,” Helen said.

She looked at me.

“Your father’s plane was not supposed to crash. It was supposed to make an emergency landing, giving Margaret time to disappear with evidence.”

“You endangered everyone on board.”

“I was told the replacement part would only trigger a warning.”

“Who told you?”

Helen looked up at the helicopter.

“Michael Hale.”

Ryan stared at the aircraft.

Michael shook his head.

“That is a lie.”

Helen pulled a folded maintenance order from inside her jacket.

“It carries your signature.”

Michael’s face changed.

My mother took the document from him and looked at it.

Her lips parted.

Ryan whispered, “Dad?”

Michael stepped backward inside the helicopter.

The pilot turned.

It was Leonard.

He had somehow reached the aircraft through the warehouse roof while we fought below.

He pressed a gun against my mother’s neck.

The helicopter banked away from the yacht.

Leonard’s voice came through the phone.

“Bring the red envelope to Pier Four, Clara, or your mother dies a second time.”

The yacht timer reached one minute.

The life raft floated beside the tunnel entrance.

Ryan looked at me.

Vanessa looked at the helicopter carrying my mother away.

Daniel watched the bomb timer.

Helen held the forged maintenance order.

And from the lower deck, Emily shouted that the water around the yacht had begun burning.
