Chapter 11 - The Men Waiting at the Industrial Pier

The yacht drifted toward the abandoned pier.
Three black SUVs idled beneath rusted warehouse lights. Four armed men stood behind concrete barriers, their faces hidden by dark caps and mirrored glasses.
The laser points remained steady on Ryan and Leonard.
None touched me.
That frightened me more.
The loudspeaker crackled.
“Clara Mercer, step forward alone.”
Helen pulled me back from the porthole.
“Do not let them see your condition.”
“They already know who I am.”
“They may not know you are injured.”
Leonard pushed away from the wall.
“We need to reverse.”
Daniel checked the control panel.
“Ryan locked navigation to a remote docking program.”
“Break it.”
“If I break it now, we lose steering.”
Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs with Emily behind her.
Smoke smeared the red silk of her dress.
She looked toward the pier.
“Who are they?”
Leonard said nothing.
Helen answered.
“The Archer Consortium.”
Vanessa blinked.
“That sounds made up.”
“It is a private investment group,” Helen said. “They financed medical shipping contracts through Mercer Foundation subsidiaries.”
I looked at Leonard.
“You used foundation companies.”
“They were dormant.”
“You stole through them.”
“I moved capital.”
“Into what?”
His silence answered enough.
Helen said, “Unregistered medical cargo. Offshore clinics. Controlled substances. Human tissue.”
My stomach turned.
Ryan stared at Leonard.
“You told me it was procurement fraud.”
“You did not need details.”
“The men on that pier plan to kill us because of tissue trafficking?”
“They plan to recover records.”
I touched the necklace.
“The recorder captured that.”
Leonard looked at the diamond.
For the first time, he seemed afraid of me rather than the people outside.
The loudspeaker spoke again.
“Clara, your father owed us.”
Helen moved beside me.
“Thomas did not owe them. He discovered them.”
“Then why do they want me alive?”
“Because the trust controls access to the offshore subsidiaries.”
Daniel looked at the computer feed on the wall.
“If they force Clara to authenticate, they can move everything before the dead-man freeze completes.”
“How long?” I asked.
“Fourteen minutes.”
The timer on the black phone matched his estimate.
Ryan looked at it.
“What happens after the freeze?”
“All Mercer-controlled accounts lock pending external review.”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“So no one gets the money.”
Daniel looked at her.
“That is what you’re worried about?”
“It is why everyone tried to murder her.”
At least she was honest.
A cable launcher fired from the pier.
A hook struck the yacht’s bow rail and locked.
Another cable followed.
Men began pulling us toward the dock.
Emily pointed toward the orange life raft.
“The release may be fake, but the raft is real.”
Ryan held up the remote.
“Only I can launch it.”
Daniel reached toward him.
Ryan raised the device above the railing.
“One move and it goes into the water without anyone.”
“Then we take the tender,” Emily said.
“Fuel line is cut.”
Leonard looked at Ryan.
“You planned every exit.”
“I planned mine.”
“Where?”
Ryan smiled.
A helicopter’s distant thump reached us from inland.
Vanessa looked up.
“You called a helicopter?”
Ryan did not answer.
The betrayal crossed her face slowly.
He had arranged an escape for one person.
Maybe two, if he still needed me.
The men on the pier tightened the cables.
The yacht bumped against the dock.
A boarding ladder slammed onto the rail.
Helen moved close.
“Clara, listen carefully. Locker Three opens only with your handprint.”
“Then they cannot open it without me.”
“Yes.”
“Where is it?”
“Inside the marina vault beneath the west office.”
“We are at the east industrial pier.”
“There is an underwater maintenance tunnel connecting them.”
Emily nodded.
“Old fuel passage.”
Ryan heard.
He raised the remote.
“No one leaves.”
The first armed man climbed onto the bow.
He aimed his rifle at Leonard.
“Mr. Price.”
Leonard lifted his hands.
The man turned toward me.
“Mrs. Mercer, we need your cooperation.”
“You tried to have me delivered.”
“No. We tried to stop Leonard from destroying the records.”
“By pointing rifles at my yacht?”
“Your husband killed the last messenger.”
Ryan’s face changed.
“What messenger?”
The armed man reached into his jacket and removed a photograph.
He tossed it onto the deck.
It showed a young man lying beside a marina warehouse.
Vanessa gasped.
“That’s my brother.”
She grabbed the picture.
Her champagne-smooth confidence shattered.
“My brother disappeared three weeks ago.”
The man looked at Ryan.
“He found the red envelope before your husband did.”
Vanessa turned slowly.
“Ryan?”
He stepped back.
“I never met him.”
The armed man shook his head.
“We have video.”
The black phone in Ryan’s pocket began playing automatically.
A grainy clip appeared.
Ryan stood beside Vanessa’s brother near the marina vault.
He struck him with a steel bar.
Vanessa looked at the screen.
Then at Ryan.
