Chapter 14 - The Missing Forty Minutes

Hospital records showed my access card entering the employee garage at 1:36 a.m. the night Jenna died.

My fingerprint opened a restricted elevator.

My old phone connected to the hospital Wi-Fi.

At 2:04, an account in my name authorized a transfer of $850,000 from the Carter trust.

At 2:13, the hospital called me at home.

I remembered answering from bed.

I remembered the dark room.

I remembered driving through empty streets.

But digital records placed me at the hospital forty minutes earlier.

Officer Ruiz did not arrest me.

He did take my statement under caution.

“Could someone have used your phone and access card?” he asked.

“My wallet was on the kitchen counter.”

“Who had access to your house?”

“Mom. Melissa. Jenna.”

“Anyone else?”

“Caleb knew where the spare key was.”

Caleb had been fourteen.

Young enough to be directed.

Old enough to carry a phone and badge.

But the fingerprint troubled Ruiz.

Hospital security used a basic scanner, not a full biometric system. A lifted print could have worked.

Mom had spent years collecting documents and signatures.

A fingerprint would not have been difficult.

The transfer required facial verification, though.

Mom claimed the camera captured me.

The bank produced a single frame.

A man in a black hood looked toward the screen.

Only half his face showed.

He resembled me.

Thomas studied the image from his hospital bed.

“That’s not Ryan.”

“How can you tell?” Ruiz asked.

“The scar.”

The man had a short scar beside his left eyebrow.

I did not.

Robert Carter had.

My dead father.

Except Robert had supposedly died six months before Jenna.

Thomas asked to see Robert’s death certificate.

The document listed cremation.

There had been no viewing.

Mom told us the injuries from the industrial accident were too severe.

I had accepted an urn.

I had never seen the body.

Ruiz gathered everyone for a formal recorded interview at the district attorney’s office.

Melissa.

Caleb, with his appointed lawyer.

Thomas.

Nora.

Lily.

My mother and Patricia remained in custody but were questioned separately.

Harold Pike was still missing.

Ethan watched by secure video from the hospital, though I asked that the screen be turned off during graphic testimony.

Lily restored part of the erased memory card from a cloud backup she had created secretly.

The recovered files included payments to Pike, Patricia, and a private medical contractor.

Nora produced duplicate medication records from an email archive.

Thomas authenticated the trust amendment.

Melissa admitted helping Mom create false timelines.

Caleb admitted striking Ethan and entering the hospital with the syringe.

One by one, the lies weakened.

Then the district attorney opened the metal box recovered from the cabin.

Caleb’s backpack contained Jenna’s phone.

The battery was dead, but the forensic team accessed the storage.

There were hundreds of files.

Photographs.

Bank records.

Audio notes.

A scheduled email Jenna had prepared but never sent.

And one video labeled FOR RYAN—PLAY ONLY IF ROBERT RETURNS.

The room became still.

“If Robert returns?” I asked.

Thomas’s face had gone pale.

The video began.

Jenna sat in her car outside Carter Supply. Rain struck the windshield.

“Ryan, I need you to listen without turning this into grief or guilt.”

Her voice shook, but her eyes were steady.

“Robert is alive.”

I stopped breathing.

“He discovered Margaret’s theft. The warehouse accident was staged because he agreed to testify. Thomas helped him disappear while they collected evidence.”

I looked at Thomas.

“You knew.”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

On-screen, Jenna continued.

“Robert wanted to tell you, but I asked him to wait until we could protect Ethan. Margaret had already threatened to accuse you of stealing from the trust.”

The video cut briefly.

Then Jenna turned the phone toward a storage unit.

A man stepped from the shadows.

Older.

Bearded.

But unmistakable.

Robert Carter.

The father who raised me.

Alive.

He looked into Jenna’s camera.

“Son, if you’re seeing this, Margaret found us before we could finish.”

The video ended there.

Ruiz checked the file.

“There should be more.”

Lily examined the phone.

“The rest was moved to external storage.”

“Where?”

A new email arrived on the district attorney’s secure computer.

The sender name was ROBERT CARTER.

The message contained a live location pin.

An abandoned chapel forty miles north.

Below it were six words.

BRING RYAN. HAROLD PIKE HAS ETHAN’S DOCTOR.
