Chapter 11 - The Person Melissa Feared

State supervision meant Ethan could remain in the hospital, but every decision required approval from an agency representative.

I could visit.

I could not take him home.

My mother could not visit either, yet the ruling still felt like a victory for her.

She had turned Ethan’s injuries into a weapon against me.

Melissa avoided me after the hearing.

Ruiz placed her in an interview room and confronted her with the smartwatch recording.

She insisted she had lied in court because Mom threatened Caleb.

“Caleb is already in custody,” Ruiz said.

“She knows people.”

“So do we.”

“You don’t know her.”

Ruiz left her alone.

Twenty minutes later, Melissa asked for me.

I entered the room with Ruiz watching through the glass.

Melissa looked older than forty. Her dark sweater was wrinkled. Mascara had dried beneath her eyes.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

“Sorry doesn’t repair ribs.”

“I know.”

“Sorry doesn’t explain why my son is under state control.”

“I know.”

“Then stop wasting my time.”

She leaned forward.

“Mom has someone inside the department.”

“Family services?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know the name.”

“Convenient.”

“She called him H.”

“Harold Pike?”

“No. Someone above him.”

I studied her.

“Why tell me now?”

“Because Caleb said something before they moved him.”

“What?”

“He said Grandma wasn’t protecting him. She was preparing to blame him for Jenna’s death.”

I sat down.

“How could Caleb be blamed for something that happened when he was fourteen?”

“Mom put Jenna’s phone and the medication report in his backpack.”

The box stolen from Nora’s house.

“She planted evidence on him.”

Melissa nodded.

“Caleb found it after he got to the hospital. He hid the backpack.”

“Where?”

“He told me only one person knows.”

“Who?”

She looked toward the observation window.

“My daughter.”

I stared at her.

“You don’t have a daughter.”

Melissa began to cry.

“Yes, I do.”

Her name was Lily.

She was twenty-two.

Melissa had given birth at seventeen, and Mom forced her to surrender the baby for adoption to protect the family’s reputation.

Years later, Lily found Melissa.

Mom discovered their contact and used it to control her.

“Where is Lily?” I asked.

“She works in hospital records.”

Everything connected.

The stolen badge.

The erased medication logs.

Access to Jenna’s file.

“Was she helping Mom?”

“No. She was helping me find out what Mom did.”

“Then why didn’t you come to me?”

“Because Lily found proof that Mom paid for her adoption through money taken from an account in your name.”

My head snapped up.

“What account?”

“A holding company. Ryan Carter Consulting.”

“I’ve never owned a consulting company.”

“On paper, you do. It received almost two million dollars.”

My mother had not only stolen from Ethan.

She had built a financial trail toward me.

If investigators found the companies before the truth, I would look like the thief.

Melissa slid a folded note across the table.

Lily had left it in a locker that morning.

B-17. Union Station. Code 0314.

The safe-deposit box number.

“Caleb hid the backpack in a locker,” I said.

Melissa nodded.

Ruiz sent officers to Union Station.

The locker was empty.

But the station cameras showed a young woman opening it twenty minutes earlier.

Lily.

She carried the backpack into the parking garage.

Then a black SUV stopped beside her.

A woman stepped out.

Cream cardigan.

My mother.

Lily backed away.

Mom spoke to her for several seconds.

Then Lily entered the SUV voluntarily.

Melissa stared at the footage.

“She wouldn’t go with Mom.”

“She did,” Ruiz said.

“No. Look at her right hand.”

The video zoomed in.

Lily held her fingers against her coat in a shape resembling the letter C.

Melissa whispered, “That was our signal when Caleb was nearby.”

The SUV turned out of the garage.

A second camera caught the license plate.

It belonged to Thomas Vale.

My biological father.
