Chapter 8 - The Call To The Police
Gloria tried to leave when the word fraud started sounding unavoidable.
She picked up her handbag.
“This conversation is over.”
Officer Reeves blocked the path to the foyer.
Captain Reeves was not law enforcement, but her presence alone made Gloria stop.
Grant looked at Daniel.
“Do you want to file a report tonight?”
Daniel looked at Ava.
The room waited.
Ava understood the question was really hers.
Not because Daniel was weak.
Because she was the person who had been hit.
The person pressured.
The person whose home they tried to take.
Gloria saw Ava thinking and softened her voice instantly.
“Ava. I know this became heated. We are all emotional because Daniel was gone.”
Ava watched her carefully.

Gloria continued.
“You don’t want to make this bigger than it needs to be.”
Marcus nodded quickly.
“Exactly. Family matter.”
Ava felt Daniel stiffen beside her.

Ava picked up her phone.
The recording timer was still running.
Then she dialed 911.
Gloria’s face changed.
“Ava.”
Ava put the phone on speaker.
“911, what’s your emergency?”
Ava’s voice shook, but it did not break.
“My name is Ava Whitmore. I need police at my residence. My mother-in-law assaulted me and tried to force me to sign property transfer papers. There may be forged documents.”
The dispatcher asked questions.
Ava answered.

Injuries.
People present.
Weapons.
No.
Documents.
Yes.
Recording.

Witnesses.
Yes.
Daniel stood beside her, silent but close.
Gloria sat down slowly.
Marcus began pacing.
Tessa cried quietly into her hands.
Ten minutes later, two county officers arrived.
Then a detective.
Because Grant Mercer had already called the trust’s legal response line, and the words forged transfer document moved things quickly.
The officers photographed Ava’s cheek.
Collected copies of the transfer packet.
Took statements from Daniel, Captain Reeves, Sergeant Cole, and Grant.
Then they separated the family.
Gloria tried to speak for everyone.
The detective stopped her.
“No, ma’am. You can speak for yourself.”
Marcus demanded an attorney.
Tessa gave a statement first.
Not noble.
Panicked.
But useful.
She admitted Gloria planned to scare Ava into signing before Daniel returned.
She admitted Marcus said the house could “solve everything.”
She admitted the notary appointment was scheduled for 9 a.m.
Gloria stared at her daughter with open betrayal.
Tessa sobbed.
“I didn’t know you were going to hit her.”
Gloria said nothing.
Marcus refused to answer questions.
His phone did not.
With a warrant later that week, investigators found messages between Marcus and Gloria.
Need her signature before hearing.
If she refuses, tell her Daniel approved.
Use the military angle.
She’s alone.
Ava read that last line in Grant’s office days later.
She’s alone.
Her hands went still.
Daniel reached for her.
She let him take her hand.
“I wasn’t,” she said softly.
“No,” he answered. “But you should never have had to prove it.”
Gloria was not arrested that night, but she left the house under police order with a pending investigation, an assault report, and a warning not to contact Ava directly.
At the doorway, she turned to Daniel.
“Are you really choosing her over your family?”
Daniel looked at Ava’s bruised cheek.
Then back at his mother.
“She is my family.”
The door closed behind Gloria.
This time, Ava locked it.
