Chapter 4 - The Night They Came With Papers

Gloria arrived at 10:18 p.m.

No call.

No warning.

Ava watched the camera feed from the kitchen as Gloria stepped onto the porch in a white silk blouse and black slacks, Marcus behind her in a navy blazer, Tessa in a red dress like she had dressed for a confrontation.

Ava considered not opening the door.

Then Marcus rang the bell and said loudly toward the camera, “Ava, we know you’re home.”

That was the first performance.

She pressed record on her phone.

Then opened the door with the chain still on.

Gloria smiled.

“Oh, don’t be dramatic.”

“It’s late.”

“It’s family.”

Ava looked at Marcus.

“At ten at night?”

Tessa lifted a folder.

“It’s important.”

Ava should have shut the door then.

But she had Daniel’s words in her head.

Let them talk.

So she unlatched the chain and stepped back.

They entered like people arriving to inspect property.

Gloria looked around the living room.

“You changed the curtains.”

“My curtains,” Ava said.

Gloria’s smile cooled.

Marcus placed the folder on the coffee table.

“We need signatures.”

Ava stood near the armchair, phone hidden in her cardigan pocket, recording.

“For what?”

Gloria sat without being invited.

“A practical family arrangement.”

Tessa spread the papers across the table.

“Temporary transfer into Whitmore Holdings for deployment protection.”

Ava looked at the header.

Property Ownership Reassignment.

Her pulse slowed.

Fear sharpened into focus.

“This is not temporary.”

Marcus laughed.

“It’s paperwork. You wouldn’t understand the structure.”

Ava looked at him.

“I understand my name is being removed.”

Gloria sighed.

“Daniel is overseas serving this country. The least you can do is make sure his family has authority if something happens.”

“This house is in my trust.”

Tessa rolled her eyes.

“There it is. My trust. My house. My rules.”

Ava looked at Gloria.

“Daniel would never agree to this.”

Gloria’s face hardened.

“Daniel has always been too soft with you.”

Marcus leaned forward.

“You think being married to a soldier means posting cute airport photos and living in a house you didn’t earn?”

Ava’s hand tightened inside her pocket.

“My grandmother earned it.”

Gloria stood.

“And your grandmother is dead.”

The words hit the room hard.

Ava’s throat tightened.

She heard Daniel’s voice.

Do not react.

So she breathed.

Gloria took one step closer.

“You will sign tomorrow. You will appear before the notary. You will transfer the house into the family structure. Then you will stop acting like this property makes you above us.”

“No.”

The slap came fast.

Sharp.

Ava’s face turned with the force of it.

For one second, everything went silent.

Then Marcus laughed.

Not nervous.

Delighted.

“There she is,” he said. “Finally listening.”

Gloria grabbed Ava’s chin and forced her face up.

“Sign it tomorrow.”

Ava’s eyes filled.

Her cheek burned.

But the phone in her pocket was still recording.

Tessa crossed her arms.

“You should be grateful we’re giving you time to sleep on it.”

Ava’s phone vibrated.

A message appeared beneath the cardigan edge.

Landing early. Don’t react. I’m bringing witnesses.

Ava looked at the front door.

Then at the papers.

Then at Gloria.

“You’re sure about that?”

Gloria did not understand the question.

May you like

Not yet.

👉 Ava let them think fear had silenced her, but every threat and the slap had already been captured on her phone.
