Chapter 12 - The Man Appointed by the Court

Police locked down Naomi’s office.
Her assistant regained consciousness with a concussion and no memory of the attacker’s face. Building cameras showed a maintenance worker entering through the rear stairwell using a cloned access badge.
The worker left carrying a narrow document case.
No clear facial image was captured.
Detective Shaw ordered protection for Evelyn and Naomi.
He also contacted the court.
By then, Adrian Cross had already entered the downtown clinic.
As temporary custodian, he possessed a judge’s order and immediate authority to secure records.
Evelyn called Teresa.
“Do not let him access the basement.”
“I tried to stop him,” Teresa whispered. “He brought two court officers.”
“Where is he now?”
“In Simon’s old treatment room.”
“Why?”
“He said he needed to inspect the walls.”
Evelyn turned to Naomi.
“We’re going.”
“You are under police protection.”
“Then the police can come with us.”
They reached the clinic to find Adrian standing in the corridor beside a section of removed drywall.
He was a lean man in his late fifties with carefully combed gray hair and wire-framed glasses. His suit remained spotless despite the dust.
Two court officers watched from several feet away.
Behind the broken wall, a narrow cavity had been exposed.
It was empty.
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
“You arrived too late.”
“What was there?”
“A storage tube.”
“Who removed it?”
“Someone before me.”
“You told me the second half of the ledger was inside the walls.”
“It was.”
“How did you know?”
His expression tightened.
“Laura told me.”
“The police file says you were her husband.”
“I was.”
“Someone broke into my attorney’s office and wrote that you weren’t.”
Adrian removed his glasses.
“Laura and I married under false names.”
“What was yours?”
He looked toward the officers.
“Not here.”
“You volunteered for court control, entered my clinic and opened a wall. You will answer me here.”
The court officers exchanged a glance.
Adrian lowered his voice.
“My birth name was Andrew Bennett. Laura used my surname after she escaped Pennsylvania.”
“You knew she was Rebecca Carter?”
“Yes.”
“You knew Daniel was her son?”
“Yes.”
“Did you ever tell him?”
“She tried.”
“And Simon killed her.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Simon sedated her. Margaret held her down when she began to wake.”
Evelyn felt her stomach turn.
“How do you know?”
“I watched the original security video.”
“Where is it?”
“Encoded on the red strip.”
“Then why wasn’t it given to police?”
“Because the strip also exposes federal agents, attorneys and insurers who protected Simon’s network.”
Naomi stepped closer.
“Who wrote the warning about you?”
“Someone who wants Evelyn to distrust the only person capable of decoding the ledger.”
“Can you decode it?”
“Yes.”
“Does Margaret know?”
“She knows part of the system.”
Evelyn looked at the empty cavity.
“Who took the storage tube?”
Adrian pointed toward faint marks inside the wall.
“The screws were replaced recently. Whoever opened it knew the exact location.”
“Caleb Morton?”
“Possibly.”
“Daniel?”
“No.”
“You sound certain.”
“Daniel never knew the second half existed.”
Evelyn studied him.
Adrian claimed to possess rare knowledge, but he had revealed it only after gaining legal authority over the clinics. He could be telling the truth.
He could also be the person Simon sent to retrieve the remaining evidence.
Officer Brooks entered the treatment room.
“We found something in the alley.”
She held a clear bag containing a small metal tube.
Adrian moved toward it.
Brooks stepped back.
“It was empty.”
“Fingerprints?” Naomi asked.
“Pending.”
Evelyn looked inside the open wall.
A thin wire ran along the bottom of the cavity.
Not electrical.
A data cable.
“Owen,” she said.
The cybersecurity specialist was working upstairs. He arrived with tools and traced the wire through the wall to an unused network panel.
He connected a diagnostic device.
“There’s an old local server attached somewhere in the building.”
“Can you access it?” Evelyn asked.
“Maybe.”
Adrian’s composure slipped.
“You should disconnect that.”
“Why?”
“If the system detects unauthorized access, it may erase itself.”
Owen paused.
“How do you know?”
Adrian did not answer.
Evelyn looked at Officer Brooks.
“Keep him away from the panel.”
The court officers objected, but Brooks positioned herself between Adrian and the wall.
Owen entered a series of commands.
A list of hidden directories appeared.
Most were encrypted.
One folder was not.
Its name was CARTER.
Inside were scanned photographs, audio fragments and a video file dated two months before Evelyn met Daniel.
Owen opened it.
The image showed Margaret sitting in this same treatment room with Simon Vale.
They were younger, but unmistakable.
Daniel stood near the doorway.
Margaret placed a photograph of Evelyn on the counter.
“She has Carol’s eyes,” Simon said.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“What do you want me to do?”
“Meet her,” Margaret answered.
“And then?”
“Make her trust you.”
The video skipped.
The next clear segment showed Simon placing a folder in Daniel’s hands.
“Once she owns the clinics, we recover everything her mother took.”
Daniel asked, “What happens to Evelyn after that?”
Margaret looked directly toward the hidden camera.
“She becomes unnecessary.”
The file ended.
Nobody spoke.
Evelyn stood motionless.
Daniel had lied during the hospital interview.
He claimed he did not know about the plan when they married.
The video proved he had known from the beginning.
Naomi touched Evelyn’s shoulder.
Evelyn did not react.
Her marriage, her infertility treatments, the financial dependence, the years of emotional manipulation—none of it had begun by accident.
Daniel had entered her life under instruction.
Officer Brooks turned toward Adrian.
“You knew this file existed.”
“I suspected.”
“You tried to stop us from accessing it.”
“To protect the larger archive.”
“Or to hide your involvement.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
Before he could answer, Owen’s diagnostic screen changed.
A new connection appeared.
Someone outside the clinic had remotely entered the hidden server.
Files began disappearing.
“Disconnect it!” Adrian shouted.
Owen pulled the network cable.
Too late.
The CARTER folder vanished.
Then every light in the clinic went out.
Emergency lamps flickered red along the corridor.
From somewhere behind the wall came the click of an unlocking mechanism.

A hidden door opened inside Simon’s old treatment room.
And Margaret stepped out holding the red strip in one hand and a revolver in the other.
