Chapter 1 - The Sound of His Silence

The baseball bat struck Evelyn Carter across the lower ribs before she had time to lift her arm.
The impact forced every breath from her body.
Her knee buckled. Her shoulder twisted. She crashed onto her hip and outstretched hand beside Margaret Hale’s polished dining table.
A crystal wineglass fell with her.
It struck the hardwood floor and exploded into glittering fragments.
Red wine spread between the shards, dark and glossy in the late-afternoon light.
For one stunned second, Evelyn could hear nothing but the blood pounding inside her ears.

Something in her voice stopped him.
It was not volume.
It was the absence of pleading.
Evelyn activated the call without looking at the screen. She had rehearsed the sequence so many times that her thumb remembered what her mind could barely process.
One tap.
A pause.
Another tap.
The call connected.
Evelyn’s gaze lifted past Margaret’s shoulder toward the hallway arch.
A small security camera was mounted near the ceiling.
Its green indicator light blinked steadily.
Margaret followed her eyes.
For the first time, uncertainty entered the older woman’s face.
Daniel turned slowly toward the camera.
His mouth parted.
Evelyn brought the phone closer to her lips.
“Start the file.”
The person on the other end did not answer aloud.
They did not need to.
Evelyn lowered the phone but kept the call active. She reached into the fallen handbag and removed a sealed legal envelope.
Her fingers shook as she placed it on the floor beside the spilled wine.
Margaret’s eyes fixed on it.
Daniel’s face drained of color.
“What is that?” he whispered.
Evelyn looked at the blinking camera.
Then at the envelope.
Then at the man who had watched his mother strike her.
Margaret’s hands loosened.
May you like
The bat slid from her grip and hit the floor with a heavy wooden crack.
Inside Evelyn’s phone, a quiet electronic voice finally said, “Authorization confirmed. All linked accounts are now under emergency review.”
