Chapter 11 - My Mother’s Warning

The photograph arrived with a ten-second audio message.
My mother’s voice was weak but unmistakable.
“Clara, do not give Naomi the drive. Bring it to the old conservatory by midnight. Come without police, or Samuel dies.”
Naomi listened beside me.
Her face revealed nothing.
That frightened me.
The message did not say Detective Price.
It said Naomi.
My mother knew her personally.
“How does she know your first name?”
Naomi took a long breath.
“Because I met her once.”
The room seemed to tilt.
“When?”
“Four years ago.”
Before my wedding.
Before my mother’s reported death.
Naomi sat in the chair beside my bed and placed her weapon on the table, deliberately outside her reach.
“Your father contacted me when I worked financial crimes. He suspected someone inside Whitmore Medical was diverting research funds through Vale-controlled foundations.”
“You investigated him?”
“Unofficially. He didn’t trust his board.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because he died before he gave me the documents. Your mother asked me to stop. She said the evidence was compromised and that approaching you would expose you.”
The explanation was logical.
That did not make it safe.
“Did you help fake her death?”
“No.”
“Did you know she was alive?”
“Not until tonight.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“No. I expect you to verify it.”
Naomi unlocked her phone and handed it to me.
Her archived case notes showed three meetings with my father and one with my mother. The final entry was dated two days after Elaine’s supposed death.
SUBJECT FAILED TO APPEAR. POSSIBLE ABDUCTION OR VOLUNTARY FLIGHT.
Naomi had searched for her.
The case had been closed by a supervisor.
That supervisor’s name was Daniel Cross.
Arthur Vale’s college roommate.
The conspiracy widened again.
Evelyn returned while we reviewed the files.
Her cheek was bruised.
“Someone followed me from the station.”
She had escaped by driving into a crowded police parking lot.
The follower’s vehicle belonged to a Vale Foundation security contractor.
Evelyn placed a second phone on the table.
“I took this from my mother’s dressing room before the police sealed the mansion.”
Naomi’s brows drew together.
“You withheld evidence?”
“I didn’t know who to trust.”
“Neither do I,” I said.
The phone required facial recognition.
Evelyn knew Beatrice’s backup code.
Inside were messages with Arthur, Julian, Preston Hale, and an unidentified contact saved as H.
The latest exchange had occurred minutes before my assault.
H: SHE MUST BE PROVOKED PUBLICLY.
BEATRICE: JULIAN WILL HANDLE IT.
H: THE CHILD CANNOT REACH TERM UNDER HER CONTROL.
BEATRICE: BY 3:00 SHE WILL BE TRANSFERRED.
Another message followed at 2:50.
H: CAMERA ARCHIVE COMPROMISED. MOVE ELAINE.
My mother had not sent the threat alone.
Someone labeled H controlled her location.
Henry was dead.
Halcyon was a company.
Or H was a person using both as cover.
We searched older messages.
One from six months earlier included a photograph of my ultrasound.
H: MALE CONFIRMED. BEGIN PHASE TWO.
Evelyn turned pale.
“Julian said Chloe’s baby was his heir.”
“Chloe may not be pregnant,” I said.
Or she was pregnant for another reason.
Naomi traced the messages through a secure server associated with Whitmore Medical Systems.
Someone inside my own company had directed the Vale family.
My mother’s warning not to trust Naomi might have been forced.
Or it might have been genuine.
At 11:12, another message arrived.
This one included live video.
Dr. Reed remained bound.
My mother stood beside him holding the missing music box.
A masked figure entered the frame and placed a hand on her shoulder.
She flinched.
Then the figure removed the mask.
It was Evelyn.
The woman standing beside my hospital bed stared at the screen with me.
Two Evelyns.

One of them was lying.
