Chapter 1 - The Fist That Ended My Marriage

Julian’s fist drove into my shoulder and upper chest with enough force to throw me backward into the tower of baby-shower gifts.

Boxes burst beneath me.

Blue tissue paper flew through the air. A silver tray of cupcakes flipped from the table, scattering frosting across the white marble floor. My hip struck the corner of a wrapped stroller box before I landed hard on my side, both arms folding instinctively around my eight-month-pregnant belly.

For one terrible second, I could not breathe.

My baby moved beneath my hands.

That tiny, frightened kick was the only thing that kept me from screaming.

“She’s the one carrying my real heir,” Julian shouted, pointing toward Chloe. “You barren piece of trash.”

The room went silent except for the soft hiss of a blue balloon losing air beneath a crushed gift box.

I tasted blood.

My split lip burned as I lifted my eyes toward the man I had married four years earlier.

Julian stood over me in his tailored charcoal suit, his chest rising quickly. His dark hair had fallen across his forehead, but he did not look shocked by what he had done.

He looked relieved.

As though striking his pregnant wife in front of his parents, his mistress, and twenty invited guests had finally freed him from the burden of pretending.

Chloe stood beside him in a pink designer dress, one hand resting delicately against her flat stomach.

She smiled down at me.

“You really shouldn’t have caused a scene, sweetie.”

I had not caused the scene.

I had arrived at my own baby shower and found Chloe seated in my chair beneath the gold-and-blue balloon arch, opening gifts labeled for my unborn son.

Julian had announced that Chloe was pregnant.

Then he claimed my baby was not his.

The guests nearest the doorway lowered their eyes. Two women I recognized from Beatrice’s charity board exchanged uncomfortable glances, but neither moved.

Beatrice, my mother-in-law, stood near the fireplace in a cream silk suit and pearl-colored gloves.

She began to clap.

Slowly.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Her husband, Arthur, did not join her. He merely stared at me over the rim of his crystal glass, his expression as cold as the mansion’s marble walls.

“At last,” Beatrice said. “The family can move forward.”

The words should have shattered me.

Instead, I noticed the grandfather clock behind Julian.

Its second hand moved toward twelve.

My cracked wristwatch read 1:59.

I had been careful about the time.

Careful about everything.

I rolled slightly onto my side, feeling the sting of broken cardboard beneath my cheek. My lip dripped onto the pale blue fabric of my maternity dress.

Julian’s mouth curved.

He believed I was defeated.

That was his first mistake.

I slowly lifted my wrist until he could see the damaged watch face.

“It’s one fifty-nine, Julian.”

His smirk faltered.

Only for a second.

Then he laughed.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

I wiped the blood from my mouth with my thumb and studied the stain as though it belonged to someone else.

At 1:57, the hidden emergency trigger inside my watch had transmitted.

At 1:58, the encrypted recording had begun uploading.

At 1:59, every person in that room had already become part of the evidence.

I looked past Julian toward the tall glass entrance doors.

“Did you really think I came here alone?”

The first impact struck from outside.

Heavy glass cracked across the entrance in a white spiderweb.

Chloe gasped.

Red and blue light flashed violently through the windows, washing over the ruined gifts and turning Julian’s face paper-white.

But the sound that frightened him most was not the glass breaking.

It was the voice behind the door calling his full legal name.
