Chapter 5 - Shut The Party Down

Gabriela tried to recover the room.
She was very good at that.
A smile.
A softer voice.
A gentle touch toward Preston’s sleeve.
“Darling, this is not what it looks like.”
Preston stepped away from her hand.
“What does it look like?”
Her smile stiffened.
“Esther was helping.”
Esther laughed once.
Small.
Broken.
Preston heard it.
So did Gabriela.
So did the chef.
So did Victor Kane, the security manager standing in the hallway after receiving Preston’s message.
Preston looked at the pan in the sink.
“At my family gala?”
Gabriela lowered her voice.
“You are tired from travel. We should discuss this privately.”
“No.”
That one word cut through the kitchen.
Guests near the hallway began turning.
Gabriela noticed and moved quickly toward the door.
Preston spoke before she reached it.
“Victor.”
The security manager stepped in.
“Yes, sir.”
“Shut the party down.”
Gabriela’s face changed.
“Preston, don’t be absurd.”
Victor looked at Preston only.
“All of it?”
Preston’s eyes stayed on Esther.
“The music. The bar. The speeches. The donor presentation. Everything.”
Victor nodded.
He lifted his hand to his earpiece.
“Shut the party down.”
Outside, the music died in the middle of a song.
The string quartet stopped.
The bar staff paused service.
The ballroom lights shifted from warm gold to neutral white.
A wave of confusion moved through the estate.
Guests began drifting toward the hallway.
Gabriela grabbed Preston’s arm.
“You will not humiliate this family.”
Preston looked at her hand.
“Take your hand off me.”
She did.
Slowly.
Tessa appeared at the kitchen door in a black gown, glass of champagne in her hand.
“What is happening?”
Preston turned to her.
“Good. You’re here.”
Tessa looked at Esther, then at the apron, then at the guests gathering behind her.
Her expression flickered.
Not guilt.
Calculation.
“She wanted to help,” Tessa said.
Esther looked up.
For years, she had let things pass because responding made her seem difficult.
Not tonight.
“No, I didn’t.”
Tessa blinked.
Esther untied the apron fully and dropped it onto the floor.
The blue dress was wrinkled underneath, but still beautiful.
Preston took her hands gently.
The skin was red.
He looked at the chef.
“How hot was the water?”
The chef swallowed.
“Too hot for bare hands, sir. I told her to stop.”
Preston looked back at his mother.
Gabriela’s face went pale.
More guests gathered.
Donors.
Cousins.
Board members.
Hotel executives.
People Gabriela had invited to admire a family built on grace.
Preston reached behind the sink and picked up Esther’s phone.
The recording timer was still running.
He stopped it.
Then held it up.
Gabriela whispered, “Preston.”
He looked at her.
“Now everyone hears it.”
Lionel Marsh, the family attorney, arrived from the front hall, already holding his phone.
“Preston, I received the file.”
Preston nodded.
“Good.”
Gabriela’s voice sharpened.
“You sent private family audio to counsel?”
Esther finally looked straight at her.
“You made it public when you put me in the kitchen.”
The guests heard that too.
A murmur went through the doorway.
Preston took Esther’s hand.
Then turned toward the ballroom.
“Come with me.”
Esther hesitated.
Her first instinct was still to hide.
Preston saw it and softened.
“Only if you want.”
That question mattered.
After everything tonight, someone had finally asked.
Esther squeezed his hand.
May you like
“I want them to hear.”
👉 Preston stopped the gala to protect Esther, but Esther chose to walk into the ballroom herself so Gabriela could not rewrite what happened.
