Chapter 10 - Gabriela’s Apology Was Not Enough

Gabriela sent flowers the next afternoon.
White roses.
The same flowers from the gala.
Esther looked at the arrangement on her porch and laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because Gabriela had somehow turned even an apology into bad symbolism.
The card read:
Emotions ran high. I regret the misunderstanding.
Esther did not bring the flowers inside.
She sent a photo to Preston.
He replied:
Do you want me to handle it?
Esther typed:
No. I will.
She called the florist and had the roses delivered to the Hale Foundation office with a note attached.
Please compost. They are from a misunderstanding.
Preston laughed for a full minute when Lionel told him.
But Gabriela did not laugh.
Her second attempt came through Malcolm.
He called Esther himself.
His voice was slow but firm.
“I want you to know I am ashamed.”
Esther sat at her kitchen island, bandaged hands around a mug of tea.
“You didn’t do it.”
“I allowed my house to become a place where she believed she could.”
That was different from Gabriela’s card.
That was responsibility.
Esther softened.
“Thank you for saying that.”
“I should have said more sooner.”
“Yes.”
Malcolm exhaled.
“I know.”
He did not ask her to forgive Gabriela.
That mattered.
The full board investigation began within the week.
Staff gave statements.
Emails surfaced.
Tessa had sent instructions to the catering team:
Do not direct donors to Esther. If asked, say she is unavailable.
Gabriela had changed the seating chart.
Gabriela had removed Esther’s name from the donor recognition slides.
Gabriela had told security that Esther “might become emotional and should be redirected away from the ballroom if necessary.”
Preston read that line and nearly broke his phone.
Esther did not cry when she saw it.
She was past shock now.
Shock belongs to people who still think cruelty is accidental.
Gabriela’s formal apology came only after the investigation summary was drafted.
This time, she requested an in-person meeting.
Esther agreed on one condition.
Lionel present.
Preston present.
Meeting recorded.
Gabriela arrived in a black dress with no jewelry.
That was supposed to signal humility.
It mostly signaled strategy.
She sat across from Esther in Lionel’s office.
“I am sorry,” Gabriela said.
Esther waited.
“I let my concerns about Preston’s future affect my behavior.”
Esther’s face stayed calm.
“Try again.”
Gabriela blinked.
Preston looked at his mother, saying nothing.
Gabriela swallowed.
“I humiliated you.”
Esther waited.
“In front of staff.”
“And?”
Gabriela’s lips tightened.
“In front of guests.”
“And?”
Gabriela looked down.
“I treated you like you did not belong in the family.”
Esther leaned forward.
“No. You treated service workers like they were beneath the family and then put me there to punish me.”
Gabriela’s face flushed.
There it was.
The deeper truth she did not want to touch.
Esther continued.
“If I had been a server, what you said would still have been wrong. If I had been a dishwasher, it would still have been wrong. You are not sorry because you disrespected labor. You are sorry because you were caught doing it to someone with your last name.”
Silence filled the room.
Preston looked at Esther with quiet awe.
Gabriela’s eyes flickered with anger.
Then something like shame.
Maybe.
“I don’t know how to answer that,” Gabriela whispered.
Esther stood.
“Then don’t ask me for forgiveness until you do.”
She walked out with Preston beside her.
The apology was not accepted.
May you like
But the terms of truth had finally changed.
👉 Gabriela tried to apologize without naming the real cruelty, but Esther refused to let her hide class contempt behind family drama.
