PART 7: The Man Who Sold the Route

PART 7: The Man Who Sold the Route

Grant Keller listened to Ethan’s final message without blinking.

At first.

Command… this is Walker… Keller diverted us.

His jaw tightened.

Contractor route compromised.

His eyes dropped.

Rex has visual.

His breathing changed.

Do not trust Keller.

By the time Ethan said Claire’s name, Grant’s hand had curled into a fist.

Bennett stopped the recording.

The room was silent.

Claire sat across from Grant.

Marcus stood beside the door, arms folded, face carved from stone.

Bennett asked one question.

“Who paid you?”

Grant laughed under his breath.

“No one.”

Bennett pressed play again.

Ethan’s voice filled the room.

Keller diverted us.

Grant snapped, “Turn it off.”

Claire leaned forward.

“No.”

Grant looked at her then.

Not at Bennett.

Not at Marcus.

At Claire.

“He should have minded his own business.”

Marcus moved before anyone else.

Bennett lifted one hand.

Marcus stopped, barely.

Claire did not flinch.

“My husband found your invoices.”

Grant’s face twitched.

“He didn’t understand what he was looking at.”

“He understood enough to scare you.”

Grant’s mouth closed.

Bennett placed printed records on the table.

Shell payments.

Route changes.

Missing equipment.

Unauthorized communication logs.

“You sold movement windows,” Bennett said.

Grant stared at the papers.

“We were underpaid. Underprotected. You military people think contractors are disposable until you need us.”

Claire’s voice was low.

“So you sold American routes?”

Grant’s eyes flashed.

“I sold timing estimates. Not routes.”

Marcus took one step forward.

“My team walked into an ambush because of your estimate.”

Grant looked away.

For the first time, he looked smaller than the man Rex had hated.

Bennett continued.

“Ethan discovered the pattern.”

Grant said nothing.

“You diverted his team east because that was the window you had sold.”

Grant swallowed.

Claire felt her hands shaking under the table.

Not from fear.

From the effort it took not to break.

Grant whispered, “I didn’t know they’d hit that hard.”

Marcus’s voice broke through.

“They killed him.”

Grant snapped, “I didn’t pull the trigger!”

Claire stood.

The room froze.

She walked to the table and placed both hands flat on the surface.

“No,” she said. “You just opened the door and pointed.”

Grant’s face crumpled for a second.

Then he tried one last lie.

“He was already injured. I couldn’t save him.”

Claire’s voice became almost silent.

“Rex saw you.”

Grant’s eyes flicked toward the wall.

“Rex is a dog.”

“No,” Claire said. “Rex was Ethan’s partner.”

That word hit Marcus hard.

Partner.

Not equipment.

Not asset.

Partner.

Bennett gave a signal.

The door opened.

A handler stood outside with Rex on a reinforced lead.

The dog was calm now.

Controlled.

But the second his eyes found Grant, the growl returned.

Grant pressed back into his chair.

“Get him out.”

Claire looked at Rex.

“Easy.”

Rex stopped pulling but did not stop staring.

Bennett leaned toward Grant.

“Your official statement said you never came within visual range of Walker after signal loss.”

Rex growled again.

Claire said, “He knows that’s a lie.”

Grant stared at the dog.

Then at Claire.

Then at Ethan’s message on the tablet.

His shoulders dropped.

And finally, the story started coming out.

Not cleanly.

Not bravely.

Piece by piece.

Grant had sold movement times to a middleman.

He claimed he never knew who bought them.

He claimed Ethan confronted him days before the mission.

He claimed he panicked when Ethan survived the ambush long enough to reach him.

“He said he was reporting me,” Grant whispered.

Claire felt the room tilt.

“What did you do?”

Grant’s eyes filled with cowardly tears.

“I left.”

Marcus’s face went pale.

“You left him alive?”

Grant did not answer.

He did not need to.

Rex began to whine.

A terrible, broken sound.

Claire turned away.

For six months, she had imagined Ethan dying in battle.

Now she knew he had also been abandoned.

Not by chance.
