PART 5: The Footage From Rex

PART 5: The Footage From Rex

They played the footage in a small briefing room off the hangar.

Claire sat at the table with both hands locked together.

Marcus stood behind her.

Admiral Bennett stood near the screen.

Grant Keller sat across from them with two military police officers by the door.

His face had gone flat.

Too flat.

The way guilty men look when they are trying not to react before they know what has been found.

The video began with static.

Then darkness.

Then Rex’s breathing.

Heavy.

Fast.

The camera angle was low, moving through dust and broken light.

Ethan’s voice came through first.

“Rex, heel.”

Claire’s hand flew to her mouth.

Six months of silence broke in one word.

Ethan.

Alive.

Focused.

Commanding.

The video shook as Rex moved beside him.

Gunfire cracked in the distance.

Men shouted over comms.

Then Grant Keller’s voice came through.

“Route is clear. Move east.”

Marcus stiffened.

“That’s wrong,” he whispered.

Claire looked up.

“What?”

Marcus’s face had gone pale.

“East was never the extraction route.”

On the screen, Ethan stopped.

His voice sharpened.

“Keller, confirm. East takes us into the service road.”

Grant answered, “Command updated. Move east now.”

Ethan did not move.

Rex’s ears filled the bottom of the frame.

Then Ethan said, “Negative. That’s exposed ground.”

Grant’s voice came back harder.

“Chief, you are burning time.”

Ethan’s breathing changed.

Claire knew that sound.

It was how he sounded when his body was calm but his mind had already found danger.

Then another voice came over the radio.

Distorted.

Unknown.

“Package compromised if team delays.”

Marcus stepped closer to the screen.

“That wasn’t our net.”

Bennett’s jaw tightened.

The footage jumped.

An explosion flashed.

Rex barked.

The camera spun low to the ground.

Ethan shouted, “Ambush! Fall back!”

The screen became chaos.

Dust.

Boots.

Muzzle flashes.

Rex lunging forward.

Then Ethan’s voice, closer now.

“Keller, you gave us the wrong route!”

No answer.

“Keller!”

Still nothing.

Then Rex turned.

The camera caught movement near a concrete wall.

A man in contractor gear.

Grant.

He was not with command.

He was not at a safe relay point.

He was there.

On site.

Watching.

Claire stopped breathing.

On the screen, Ethan stumbled toward him, one hand pressed to his side.

Grant backed away.

Ethan grabbed his vest.

“What did you do?”

Grant’s face was visible for less than two seconds.

But it was enough.

His eyes were wide.

Not surprised.

Caught.

Then the footage cut to static.

Claire sat frozen.

No one spoke.

Bennett replayed the last ten seconds.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Grant at the wall.

Ethan confronting him.

Rex barking.

Grant backing away.

Marcus turned slowly toward Grant.

“You were there.”

Grant’s lips parted.

“I was coordinating extraction.”

Marcus’s voice shook with fury.

“You were off grid.”

Bennett said, “Your official statement placed you eight kilometers away.”

Grant said nothing.

Claire looked at him.

For months, she had imagined Ethan dying alone in the dust.

Now she knew someone had been close enough to answer him.

Someone had walked away.

“Why?” she whispered.

Grant stared at the table.

Claire stood.

Her chair scraped the floor.

“Why did you send him east?”

Grant’s eyes flicked up.

For one second, something ugly showed.

Resentment.

Fear.

Then he looked at Bennett.

“I’m done talking.”

Rex barked from the hangar, sharp and furious, as if he heard the lie through the walls.

Bennett closed the case.

May you like

“No,” he said. “You’re just getting started.”

👉 The footage proved Grant lied about where he was, but Ethan’s final message would reveal why Grant led him into the ambush.
