Chapter 6 - The Papers Brooke Didn’t Want Opened

Martin laid the access forms on the dresser.

Each page had sticky notes where Nathan had wanted Evelyn to sign.

Account management authorization.

Health decision support.

Asset consolidation approval.

Residential transition agreement.

Brooke’s fingerprints were not visible on the paper.

But her language was.

Residential transition.

Emotional burden.

Safer environment.

Temporary care placement.

Martin tapped one clause.

“This would have allowed Nathan to move funds from your sale proceeds into a joint management account.”

Evelyn nodded.

“I know.”

Nathan looked startled.

“You read it?”

Evelyn almost smiled.

“Slowly.”

Brooke snapped, “It was for efficiency.”

Martin turned another page.

“This one would have allowed Nathan to approve assisted living placement if two family members claimed Evelyn could no longer live independently.”

Brooke’s mouth shut.

Nathan stared at the carpet.

Evelyn’s voice was quiet.

“So if I refused to sign over the money, you would call me incompetent.”

Nathan lifted his head.

“No.”

Martin removed a folded brochure from the black notebook.

The assisted living facility.

Evelyn had written the date and Brooke’s exact words beneath it.

We found a place.

Brooke’s face flushed.

“You wrote down private conversations?”

Evelyn looked at her.

“Yes.”

“That’s sick.”

“No,” Evelyn said. “It’s memory with witnesses.”

Martin opened the notebook to several marked pages.

Dates.

Times.

Requests.

Threats.

Comments about money.

Brooke saying Evelyn was in the way.

Nathan saying, “Mom always does what’s best for me.”

Brooke saying, “Once she signs, we can make a serious offer.”

Nathan saying, “She doesn’t need that much at her age.”

Evelyn had written everything.

Not to hurt them.

At first, simply to remind herself she was not imagining it.

Then to prove she was not.

Nathan’s voice cracked.

“Mom, I was stressed. Brooke and I have been under pressure.”

Evelyn looked at him sadly.

“Pressure reveals people. It does not create them.”

Brooke stepped forward.

“You think you’re so smart because you bought one house? You’re seventy-four. Who’s going to take care of you when you fall?”

Martin’s eyes hardened.

Evelyn lifted the brass key.

“Myself. My doctor. My friends. Paid help if I choose. People who do not charge me love as rent.”

Brooke laughed, but it shook.

Nathan looked at Martin.

“What do you want?”

Martin answered, “To inform you that Evelyn is withdrawing any informal financial support, removing you from emergency contact authority, and filing a statement with adult protective services regarding coercive conduct.”

Brooke went still.

“Adult protective services?”

Evelyn’s hand tightened on the notebook.

“You threatened to put me in a facility unless I gave you access to my money.”

Nathan snapped, “That is not what happened.”

Martin calmly opened the notebook again.

“Would you like me to read the dates aloud?”

Nathan said nothing.

Brooke looked around the room as if searching for control she could still grab.

Then her eyes landed on the key.

She lunged for it.

Not far.

Not smart.

Evelyn pulled her hand back just as Martin stepped between them.

Nathan shouted, “Brooke!”

The key stayed in Evelyn’s palm.

The room became utterly silent.

Brooke froze, breathing hard.

Martin looked at Nathan.

May you like

“That will also be documented.”

👉 Brooke’s attempt to grab the key destroyed her last claim of concern, but Nathan still believed he could guilt Evelyn into giving him another chance.
